We all like Cauldron veggie sausages (especially the Lincolnshire ones and the Cumberland) but I'm not certain they're vegan
Correct, not vegan.
Eggs, cheese, milk are not vegan.

I have invited family over for Sunday for their favourite chicken roast. However, the group includes a vegan, one who is lactose intolerant and one who doesn't eat pork. I can cater for these, but would like to also include vegan pigs in blankets. I gather the meat-free sausages vary a lot. I would welcome your opinions on those you have tried please.

Many thanks to those of you who have tried meat free sausages and given comments which have helped me in my choice.

I agree with above. Why make food seem like meat if you don't eat meat?
There must be so many simple and quick vegan meals out there which are really tasty.
I'm not vegan but if I had a guest who was one I would just cook a great vegan meal we could all enjoy.
Cooking a chicken roast seems a bit insulting to the guest to me.Cooking a chicken roast seems a bit insulting to the guest to me.
So if you have ten guests for dinner and one is vegan, equally would it be insulting to cook vegan foo for all?
Enjoy your traditional roast chicken and I hope the person who is vegan enjoys their meal too, whatever you decide to cook sal^.
I probably wouldn't bother with fake meat alternatives, just find a good, easy vegan recipe. Mary Berry cooked something with put lentils on TV this evening which looked tasty and very easy.
I agree with Allira that I probably wouldn't bother with fake meat but find a good vegan recipe.
Puy lentils are great, you can make them really delicious. If you want an easily prepared meal for one the prepacked Merchant Gourmet lentils make a good starting point, I've just checked and they have recipes on their site, some of which are veggie or vegan. But raw lentils are pretty easy to deal with in any case. You can even add proper sausages for the meat eaters if they're determined carnivores.
My husband is one of those determined carnivores and is completely converted to eating puy lentils, with or without a sausage.
Quorn sausages are the only ones I will eat I ve tried Cauldren and Linda mcCartneys😬 and Richmond and they are all rank
I find Quorn nicer than real meat though
.
Just do the usual favourite chicken roast and let the 'odd one out' fill up on plenty of veg'. You can make a stuffing from dry ingredients as well as one with pork. Make a separate vegetable gravy.
That is more than enough effort for just one person.

You received a wide response. Well done making a choice.
I have been vegan for 11 years and I have tried every brand of vegan sausages on the market. I love the Richmond ones, not the sage and onion ones. Their vegan bacon is the best too as it crisps up really nicely in a frying pan.
As for the people saying that if you are vegan 'why would you eat something that looks like meat' the answer is quite simple. Most of us like the taste of meat but not the cruelty involved in it's production. The majority of us ate meat in our younger years so we want to find a something with a similar taste.
My Dd is a gluten and lactose free pescatarian, but we all enjoy Meatless Farm Apple & caramelised red onion sausages, plus use the meatless farm mince if we fancy a pasta bolognese. Otherwise we all eat vegetarian/vegan most of the time. With me cooking meat approximately once a week to eat with my DH.
Clearly, there are mixed opinions on Lynda McCartney, but we like them.
I'd rather eat hers than the (in my opinion) horrible Richmond offerings.
I'd rather do without though.
Linda McCartney red onion are lovely. I dont like the Quorn sausages.
we used to take something called Sosmix (I think) on camping trips.. I remember that being quite nice.. I wonder if it still exists..
Richmond chilled meat free sausages. They are lovely. I'm sure even meat eaters would enjoy them. So tasty.
The fact that there are so many differing opinions on the same products shows that we all have totally different tastes. I have a friend who is pescetarian because she hates the taste and texture of meat but it isn't for ethical reasons.
My brother in law became a vegetarian and when I entertained him at Christmas I found making the extra dishes - nut roast and vegetarian gravy as he could eat the same veg etc - quite stressful with so many other items to manage. There wasn't enough room on the cooker! Now that there are so many more vegetarians and vegans there are plenty of easy options available but this was about thirty years ago when there wasn't so much choice.
I still remember as a child visiting one of my father's uncles. He had been a conciencious objector during the war and afterwards decided if he couldn't kill people he shouldn't kill animals either. He was the first vegetarian I ever met and I still remember as it was so unusual then.
One thing I have noticed though is that there are always a lot of non-meat alternative products in the reduced sections in the supermarket. I guess that may be indicative that they are not particularly successful alternatives, though I haven't tried any myself.
I also knew a vegetatian who said he didn't like most vegetables! I wondered what he ate most ofthe time!
I think the Richmond ones are maybe more "meaty" tasting than the others?
I think they (and one other I had out somewhere but couldn't eat) are the worst if you don't like meaty tastes.
I'd rather have a nut rissole or a bean burger.
Yes. You can still get Sosmix,
pascal30 - I think there are still the two varieties as well.
M&s best in my opinion - followed by Linda McCartney Lincolnshire.
For other posters info -
Vegans are not necessarily vegans because they don't like the taste of meat. Many have been brought up eating meat - therefore replicating meat products for vegans shouldn't be a mystery.
I'm sure there are many animal meat products containing processed and probably unknown ingredients so I'm sure vegan versions that actually list ingredients are not, necessarily, any worse just without animal slaughter.
Try the ‘This Isn’t’ range. Expensive but great quality.
I’ve been veggie for almost 40 years now and would definitely recommend Cauldron sausages, Cumberland or Lincolnshire.
The trouble is those are vegetarian rather than vegan Franboleyn
I suggested Cauldron before I remembered.
They are, in my opinion, the best vegetarian ones!
I've been vegetarian for 50 plus years.
Some of them vegan (in the 80s)
I’m vegan and my favourites are Richmond plant based sausages and Heck meat free chipolatas.
Personally I can’t stand nut cutlets or tofu.
I recommend falafel for the vegan instead of vegan sausages. Easily heated in a separate dish and nutricious.
Be careful with the gravy; obviously don't let it get into the vegan's meal. No butter for the veg. Do the roast spuds with oil or dairy-free spread.
Otherwise, your vegan should be happy with all the veg. If you're feeling kind, you could make some onion gravy including some marmite.
Vegan crumble for pud is easy, just use the dairy-free spread. That Swedish vegan ice cream is good.
I write as one who has been catering for vegan DS and DiL including Christmas for the last 25 years.
I’m not a vegan but do eat lots of meat free meals. The Aldi meat free range is excellent.
My DGD enjoyed the Richmond sausages and 'bacon'. She even took the left over uncooked part packs home with her.
The roast chicken meal with every trimming imaginable went down well. All but the chicken was vegan. I thought I had over catered but almost everything was eaten. In my ignorance (according to the other thread) I wanted DGD to have an alternative source of protein as a main so did a feta/fruit honey/sesame seed filo parcel, knowing that she likes the Violife cheese.
The only puzzling thing is that I have lost a dinner plate. When I came to wash up there was one missing! It is not in any cupboard or rubbish bin, so expect it will turn up somewhere odd when I am not looking.
Best ever nut roast recipe is my daughter's incase you want to make it in future it's delicious hot or cold.
As a joke I started Whiffs recipes . It's way down the list on the forum . It's on page 2 posted at 06.28 on 9-12-2023.

Can you print your Beetroot falafel recipe please. Love beetroot and that sounds great
