Prunes and apricots

My husband is one of those people who ignore small health problems, thinking they will go away on their own given time.
Last month he ended up in hospital with serious constipation and had to be given two enemas.
He hadn't mentioned the problem to me, we have simple remedies in the bathroom cabinet if he'd bothered to look.
He got a severe "talking to" from the doctor about how dangerous it is at his age (86) along with the need for fluids and fibre.
Our daughter came to stay for a few days and brought gifts of semi-dried prunes and apricots - he does not like prunes and apricots.
Does anyone have any recipes for using up prunes and apricots?
Could I put them in a cake, or would they be tasty in a stew?
I hate waste and have two x 500g bags of each.
(Its like having another child to look after! smile )

They will go nicely in a lamb tagine casserole and in a cake too.

Google, I think you’ll find lots of recipes

Flapjacks. You can stew them and have with porridge and rice pudding.

Lamb tagine with apricots, Rick Stein recipe:

Prunes could be chopped and put into a cake, as could apricots. Or upside-down apricot cake or pudding?

Would he eat them, though?

Yes, constipation can be dangerous as I was warned after an operation last year.

This recipe from Delia is absolutely lovely even for non prune eaters!

Exdancer you have my sympathy, my husband was the same. I suggest you put the apricots cut up small in cakes and don’t tell him. Worked with mine.

Definitely recommend apricots combined with a lamb dish😋and what about a sort of flapjack bar incorporating both or some of each?

You could put them both, plus some apple in a crumble.. I bet he'd eat that..

It's really truly like having a child again, you have to laugh!

Since a bout of food poisoning, my usually regular bowels have rebelled. I now have a few prunes every day. Seems to work.

My DH dislikes apricots.

I had a recipe using pork mince that incorporated dried apricots. I chopped them up very small and he never noticed.

It was delicious, but haven’t dared risk doing it again in case he realises.

Both are great in crumbles.

Is he sure he doesn't like them?
It may just be a "bad memory"

We eat a lot of both prunes and apricots.
I soak them (or cook briefly) and have them with Greek yogurt
Yum.

Good also with pineapple and mangoes and banana.

My dad put apricots in curries and I use them in "tagine" type dishes.

Unless she has bought kilos of them I'm sure you can eat them up if he really won't.

Another vote for a lamb tagine with apricots
I'd cut the prunes up and put them in a fruit cake .
Your hubby's constipation cost the NHS about £1,000 !
Either you are married to a hypochondriac who has to gave his hands held when he has an injection or a man like my great grandfather who worked in agony with a grumbling appendix.
It was removed under chloroform on the kitchen table and he died of sepsis .
I recommend Dulcolax to keep things moving !
Good luck!

There's also a delicious French dish -roast pork with prunes which you could try.

The only way I'll eat apricots is in a lamb tagine. or well hidden in a cake. Love prunes though. At school one of the regular puddings was rice pudding with prunes. Who was the popular girl who would eat the prunes some others hated so they weren't told off by the lunchtime supervisors grin
