Making apple crumble

There’s a glut of apples this year and we all love crumbles but my weak old hands will no longer rub butter into flour.
I’ve seen American recipes which melt the butter. Has anyone done this and does it make a proper crumble? Butter is too expensive to waste now so I’m reluctant to try it.
And no oats. Proper crumble has no oats.

Hmm, I haven't melted it, but do you have a food processor? Just whiz the mixture together.

If not, then give the melted butter a try. I think the difference is the final texture of the crumble topping, it will be finer, and not as chunky, if you see what I mean.

I make the crumble mix in my food processor - flour, brown sugar, butter and a handful of nuts.

I don’t have a food processor neither did my Mum, she used melted butter and mixed it with a fork, it worked ok.

Never tried with the butter melted but always put a handful of oats in mine.

If you don't have a food processor, are your hands strong enough to grate the butter? Get it really cold or freeze it first then grate it, mix with flour and a little sugar.

If you do have a food processor, it takes seconds and you can make a big batch and freeze some in bags for another time.

The best apple crumble I ever, ever had was in a restaurant in Boston USA. I’ve tried to replicate it and failed.

Now I’m wondering if it was done with melted butter.

I’m going to give it a try this week.🤔🙂

The crumble in a packet is really good if you can’t rub the butter into the flour.
My mams tried and tested recipe is simple.
5oz SR flour
Rub in 3oz Butter
Add 3oz brown sugar
Perfect every time.
No nuts or added oats.

I bought one as I don't like the feel under my nails.

I have one of these that I bought online, but I also have my Mum's original wood and wire one that she bought at the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1948!

I’ve just made a peach and raspberry one using melted butter and oats for Sunday lunch. I’ll let you know how it turns out, my daughter will be here for lunch and she is a crumble connoisseur!

Her crumbles smelt wonderful but the texture would even challenge Hadgrid! 😶

I don't know why it's contentious. OP said she can no longer rub flour into butter and so couldn't make crumble. I was just offering a pain free solution.

I suppose a food processor might do the job too but not everyone has one...

Shame you’re anti-oats! I use half and half packet crumble and oats and then add a handful of chopped mixed nuts (also from a packet). Worth checking the crumble mix for sugar content - they do differ.

Keep it simple !
80z sr flour
4oz sugar
4 oz block butter
Put in food mixer , switch on till correct crumble consistency.
No oats, no nuts.
Use any type of sugar.

Just finished lunch (DD was working nights last night so late lunch) DD gave the crumble 8/10, high praise indeed, and so easy to make.

Some people are allergic to avenin in oats.
Just a warning if you are catering for a number of people.

I love crumble but always use packets and add oats myself. Sometimes I get brave and try to make my own and always mess it up. No idea why, I make lots of cakes very successfully.
However I have never had a food processor. I have the sam3 hand mixer for the last 40+ years I also have bamix which is very useful for various kitchen projects. But never had a full on mixer/ processor!
