Buttermilk - how to store?

I’d freeze it in small ziplock bags - they’d need to be upright in the freezer at first, but wouldn’t take up too much room.

I often freeze excess milk - have to keep a plastic bottle or two for the purpose, since we still have our milk delivered in glass,

I make my own butter so always have buttermilk, I freeze and store in good quality freezer bags from IKEA.

I do the same as hazel93, works fine.
I never had buttermilk when I wanted it then came across a recipe which gave a hint to use milk/lemon juice. Makes the best scones.

Could you freeze it in the portion size you use for baking, in freezer bags? Lay them flat in the freezer and they’ll stack nicely.

Why not make your own ? I use 240mls of milk , add 1tblsp of fresh lemon juice and leave to stand for a while. Obviously you can halve or double as required.

I’ve never thought of freezing it. Would freezing it in an ice cube tray be worth a try Luckylegs?

I buy a 500ml carton in Tesco for 89p to make soda bread. My recipe uses 400mls of it and I make a few pancakes with the remainder before I clear up after the bread making.

Thanks but freezer is chockablock permanently. I don’t make bread anyway and I wouldn’t want to fill the freezer up with bread. I was hoping for a nifty idea for freezing the buttermilk.

Make soda/wheaten bread and freeze it? Make bigger batches of scones and freeze some? (I hesitate to recommend the latter as trying to make larger quantities is often a disaster for me!).

I always follow Mary Berry’s recipe for scones and it needs buttermilk. I buy it in 500 ml tubs but it’s impossible to use it up unless you’re baking scones every day for a month! I have frozen it in little batches in clingfilm which has been successful but I wondered if anyone else has come up with a good solution for this? You can’t just use it once or twice and then throw it away - or at least my parsimonious self couldn’t do that! Any ideas please?
