Chicken thighs - per person?

I don’t often use them, but was looking up traybake recipes earlier - virtually all stating 8 to serve 4 people.

Those I usually buy are pretty big and TBH I’ve usually used one each, obviously with plenty of potatoes/rice/other veg. I’m sure it’d be different if you had hulking great, permanently ravenous teen boys to feed, but is it odd to have just one each?

It’s not a question of economising, BTW, I just feel that one per grown adult is enough.

DGS would think I'd put him on a diet if served him one.
But he is well over 6', as are DS and SIL.

If we were having anyone here for dinner I'd cook more, let people help themselves and if there were any left, they'd be fine the next day for DH and me.

I always serve one per person. It is more than sufficient.

One! That’s not enough for me and I’ve had weight loss surgery! 🤗

The Waitrose ones were really big. I ended up cutting them in half.

I buy them from our farmers market and they’re huge too, and their whole chickens are generally well over 2kg.

I generally cook a pack of four, but we never eat it all and there’s usually enough as the base for a second meal. Like you, I’m trying to cook a bit less, but better quality meat. Because it’s more expensive, we focus on cheaper cuts. (I think our Waitrose do these well on their butchery counter.)

I think if I was cooking for guests, I would cook two large ones each in case people are hungry. DSS and their wives are all tall with good appetites.

I always cook 3 for the two of us. When dishing up I split one, so we have 1 and 1/2 each.

Carnivores here, meat, meat, veggies?!

Elusivebutterfly Thu 15-Jan-26 18:33:43

The canteen at the hospital I used to work served chicken thighs most days. They always served two per person.

Never seen a single chicken thigh (even in the local butchers) that would be enough for anyone. So definitely two per person.

Dreadwitch Thu 15-Jan-26 17:19:37

I suppose it depends on the individual, personal one would be more than enough because I'd rather fill up on veg than meat.

I generally buy chicken legs and I eat a whole one. If I was buying thighs it would be 2. I try to eat a fairly high protein diet and low carbohydrate. I don't have a big appetite now, especially as I am on ozempic for my diabetes and it is the carbohydrate I need to avoid.

I have1..my sons have 2 each..so does my husband..Some men can eat loades!!...fill them up with spuds lol...I buy in bulk too.Cash and carry..I also have 4 small dogs..they have 8 between them !!!

Either you are buying enormous HENS, not chickens or you have a very small appetite.

I would never serve two chicken drumsticks per person, but perhaps you are talking about the drumstick and the joint above it. If you are, then two per person might just do.

However, if you meant the drumstick, I would cook four for each person - if they are not all eaten, the remaining ones can be used the following day, or given to the cats.

This post reminds me of my late repected maternal aunt, who was convinced that two small potatoes were sufficient for everyone sitting round her table. I personally have never, except in her house, made do with only two potatoes!

I agree with FranP that a whole chicken is better value, but I actually don't much like white meat so would always buy thighs unless I'm roasting the bird.

Chocolatenoodle8 Thu 15-Jan-26 14:34:52

Depends on size of chicken thighs. My SiL served us one chicken thigh each for dinner when we stayed with her. I was shocked! Have always bought a whole chicken but decided to try chicken thighs and found them to be very meaty and versatile so buy them regularly now.

I'd also say two decent sized ones each, but if you buy them in a pack there's often a mix of sizes which makes it more difficult.

MammaTJ Thu 15-Jan-26 14:24:53

3 each for the men in my house, my big, hard working partner and my 6' 19 year old son. I've had weight loss surgery, so 1 or 2 for me but nothing else with it.

Cambia Thu 15-Jan-26 14:21:24

I only have one but my husband has two. I do have a huge amount of vegetables though!

FranP Thu 15-Jan-26 14:11:55

Never buy them - IMHO a waste of money. I buy breast, or a whole chicken for multiple meals. Either can be portioned up, and a chopped small breast is quite a feast compared with thighs

Mojack26 Thu 15-Jan-26 14:10:09

Chicken thighs are usually fairly small 2/3 I would say....

4allweknow Thu 15-Jan-26 14:04:17

I usually assess the weight of each thigh eg 1 kilo pack with 8 thighs I'd average at 125 grms each (think 150/200 grms is about the recommended amount) and if serving a hearty appetite I'd go for two otherwise I'd have one for myself.

Quizzer Thu 15-Jan-26 13:45:16

Tesco sell a 1kg pack of thighs. I have had between 5 and 8 thighs. They vary so much in size.

Norah Thu 15-Jan-26 12:53:30

No definite answer.

It seems our non-vegan family each eat one or two.

I count on one and a half per person. Works well.

AmberGran Wed 14-Jan-26 19:16:37

2 each, especially when wrapped in bacon. DH could eat 3 if they are not wrapped or stuffed. Everyone has different appetites though.

ferry23 Wed 14-Jan-26 19:05:11

Cossy

Oreo

At least two, and if they aren’t large then three.

My kind of cook (& diner) flowers

If we could find a chicken with 6 legs, I'd cook dinner for us. grin
