Name of fruit - for a lesson I'm preparing!

Cape Gooseberries are a common name rather than the P word.

Physalis, delicious, I love them.

Yes I know them as Cape Gooseberries too. I like them too, I lightly stew them with a dash of water and honey. With ice cream, yum.

We also grow tomatillo. Just for fun really but they make a nice salsa.

I love them but havnt seen them in any supermarket in recent months. Yes I guess the p word can be misleading if mentioned in a conversation ike I had with a friend when I told her I had them earlier in the year! My pronunciation came out wrongly! I now refer to them as cape gooseberries

Physalis aka Goldenberries

Try are not related to gooseberries.

We have grown them on our allotment. They do well in the South.

The translations I was coming up with were "ground cherries" or "love in a cage", but I'll use cape gooseberries or goldenberries as being correct names.

I like the word physalis and I'd serve them with their proper name.
I think that changing names causes a lot of confusion .
I've heard them described as ground and Cape gooseberries.
There are over 90 species and half come from Mexico - they are from the nightshade family.

I thought physalis and cape gooseberries were different fruit! I have never eaten or been served it. I just know them from pictures in magazines and online, Always referred to as physalis.

I had them from Sainsbury’s two weeks ago so they are about.

We had CGs growing wild in the garden in London in the 1960s, as children we used to feed them to the pigeons and squirrels, until a relative told our parents they were edible for humans- then they became a dessert for the adults!😆

They are always known as syphalis in our family. We wouldn’t call them cape gooseberry, thought that was something else. Obviously we all know they are physalis and I would be disappointed in a teacher not calling them by their correct name! 😄
