Overnight oats fans?

I'm a late convert to these. I find myself actually looking forward to my tumbler of oats each morning. I tend to stick to just adding milk, greek yogurt, mixed seeds, blueberries and a swirl of fruit compote to the oats. I'm thinking about peanut butter and banana next for a change. Any other suggestions?

I sometimes make a batch of overnight oats. I use a large pot of ginger Greek-style yoghurt (Rachel brand, but I doubt it matters), add a large scoop of chia seeds, 2 cups of oats and a dollop of maple syrup and mix well. I then loosen the mixture with milk (the seeds will soak it up) and add frozen berries and cherries (usually summer fruits, blueberries and cherries). I divide amongst four pots, cover and refrigerate, and it does four breakfasts. It is filling and nutritious.

ViceVersa quick update. I tried your Cherry bakewell suggestion and it's lovely. I only found frozen cherries on Thursday. Delicious recipe. Thanks.
I've also found Miso paste now and am nerving myself to try than next. Thanks all!

Glad you enjoyed it - it's a favourite of mine.

Porridge makes me boak! The warm slightly texture. Yuk.

Love that word, but for me it’s the overnight stuff that has that effect.

Dint be daft. Overnight oats definitely do not taste like a handful of dry oats. You really cannot have tried properly made delicious moist fruity overnight oats. There is absolutely nothing dry about them.

Eww I can't eat them. I love porridge and overnight oats are just raw porridge and it tastes raw, literally like eating a handful of dry oats.

I ate Ready Brek or the supermarket version all the time at uni for cost reasons. Now I find oats and milk, microwaved for 2-2.5 minutes and eaten straight from the dish is just as easy.

Nicolenet Thu 05-Mar-26 13:45:05

True, apologies. Oats still not my favourite.

I prefer porridge hot, so have either Ready Brek or one of those instant pots. Cold oats first thing in the morning doesn't appeal to me.

Am another ready brek fan, cannot imagine eating cold oats soaked overnight but my grown family love it. Horses for courses I suppose. Will stick to my steaming bowl if ready brek with banana slices and golden syrup.

I bought a jar of miso after yesterday's postings but can't quite bring myself to put it in my overnight oats. I'll work up to it but meanwhile I'll try adding a spoonful to soup.

I bought a jar of miso from Amazon after listening to a Zoe podcast about fermented foods. I wish I could like it but I just can't and the thought of adding it to overnight oats is enough to tip me over the edge! However, if anyone has any other ideas of how to use miso, I'm all ears....

2507C0 I don't use it in overnight oats!
I put it on my porridge instead of a sweet alternative.

I mix my frozen berries overnight with my own mix of oats, prunes, walnuts and dried cranberries. Give them a good stir in the morning and top with Greek yoghurt,a drizzle of honey and sprinkled with a Sainsbury's mix of seeds and goja berries. Sometimes I just defrost the berries in the microwave in the morning and mix with oats etc. I like texture in my food. The smell and look of warm porridge makes me heave.

Never thought of putting dukkah in my breakfast cereal!
... though I love a big dollop of miso in my porridge!

What herbs/spices/nuts are in yours?

I toast chopped hazelnuts, sesame seeds, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fennel seeds. When cooled, I pulse them a few times in the processor and then store in a jar.

A tsp of miso paste to any dish be it pasta rice stew casserole or soup gives a rich unami savoury flavour. As does Marmite or anchovies and dried mushrooms.
If something is lacking and bland any of these additions make food moreish and addictive.

I mix up a big batch for the two of us every 10 days or so: oats, cinnamon, oat bran, ground nuts (almonds, walnuts, brazils), ground sunflower & pumpkin seeds, whole sunflower seeds, sultanas, flaked almonds & dried cranberries; we put a portion each in bowls, & soak overnight in water and/or milk; it's very cold when it comes out of the fridge, so I add a dash of hot water to mine in the morning, my husband - a recent convert to my muesli mix - adds live yogurt & a sliced banana to his.
I've been eating this same breakfast every morning for at least the past 20 years; the day just doesn't feel right unless I start with this!

I was converted to overnight oats about a year ago, having a loathing of cooked slimy oats, and have never looked back! Usually soaked with part water part milk (just to save a bit on calories) and then chopped dates and flax or chia seeds.

Most mornings I have oats, berrries, chia seeds with mixed seeds and nuts together with a big dollop of home made full fat yoghurt. It's delicious, keeps me full until lunch and is very good for the gut. I prefer full fat yoghurt because it helps with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins and doesn't contain thickeners. It is so easy to make and I use it in dressings, making labneh and it gets put into all sorts of recipes. It's also cheap, I make 4 pints for £1.50.

The day you can make it without porridge oats I'll try it. Too much like trough food for pigs and horses otherwise. You Brits!!

Yeah, I'm not sure how well 'overnight oats' with no oats would work, to be honest...

I remember learning to make Bircher muesli at school and love overnight oats with yoghurt, fruit and granola.
