Unilever, according to The Telegraph and The Guardian, have sold their foodstuffs division to the US manufacturer McCormick for approx. 44 billion.

Oh dear.

Bearing in mind the trashing of Cadbury's Dairy Milk when that was sold to an American outfit, how long before the shops will be stocking vanilla-flavoured Marmite with pistachio sprinkles?

There are only a few things I refuse to eat but Marmite and mustard are two of them, so it won't affect me. Sorry for those of you who like them if they cease to be what you enjoy.

Sady so many products seem to have changed for the worse in recent years. I'm not sure how much is that my tastes have changed or if the products have changed, but many things I used to love no longer give me the same pleasure. I guess it comes down to cost cutting along with shrinkflation! Some products can no longer call themselves chocolate coated eg Club Biscuits. I think they have to describe them as having chocolate flavoured coating.

Yep it will soon taste rubbish like Cadburys does. I used to love Cadburys but now it is chocolate flavoured not actual chocolate.
I buy ‘actual’ chocolate from Lidl or Aldi, I believe is German chocolate.

Agreed !

We can't get Marmite here so family brought several jars over for us. Some different flavoured ones, truffle, chilli etc. We will never need to buy Marmite again now.

I have to say that, as a long-time Marmite lover, I bought some Tesco own brand “Marmite” and it’s actually rather good. Spreads easier and much cheaper as well.

Bovril is the only way to go. Especially after a swim.

nanna8 Sat 04-Apr-26 23:51:31

You’ll have to get on to Vegemite, nothing else for it. At least it is still Australian not American ( for now ) . Happy little Vegemite’s as bright as bright can be.

NotSpaghetti Sat 04-Apr-26 23:55:04

No, sadly it isn't at all the same Pittcity.

NotSpaghetti Sat 04-Apr-26 23:55:42

And Vegemite’s quite unpleasant.

Essential Trading's Vitam-R Yeast Extract is delicious but not Marmite...
I like to have both!

(But not at once)

April Fool?

No, Dearie. Read the FT more often.

It's there in black and white.

Tra-la!

There's no need to be rude or patronising. I think it was a reasonable assumption given when you started the thread.

You can buy Marmite equivalents - supermarkets have their own brands. There's also the Australian Vegemite.

They’re not a patch on real Marmite though would rather go without tbh

BlueBelle Sun 05-Apr-26 07:59:44

Nanna8 she’s right though Vegemite s not an equivalent at all 🤮

No, it's definitely not. Just not the same as the real thing.

I agree, Grandmabatty! A completely unnnecessary comment which serves only to diminish the contributor.

Such depressing news! We should have a law to stop any foreign takeover of our iconic brands!

Let’s just hope they don’t ruin everything by changing the ingredients à la Cadbury’s - that sale should never have been allowed either!

NotSpaghetti Sun 05-Apr-26 09:00:47

I think Vegemite has a "texture problem" too.
I think it's the worst of the bunch to be honest.

nanna8 Sun 05-Apr-26 09:14:06

Ah well, have to agree to disagree. I don’t like marmite but I like Vegemite on toast. A thin layer, mind, not splurged on.

Hatcham Sun 05-Apr-26 10:01:52

Goodness only knows what a US company will do to mustard! Their apology for mustard just tastes yellow.
My DS works for a US company which had a celebratory BBQ one summer. He introduced his boss to proper English mustard. Boss demanded his wife import some regularly so he could eat it at home in Georgia 😁

I await to see what American tastebuds make of Marmite and Bovril.

There's no sugar in them, honey.

Galaxy Sun 05-Apr-26 12:55:58

I have just discovered toast with marmite and peanut butter, it is amazing, the Americans might like that.

I want marmite, proper marmite

You and me both, Anniebach! I may have to stockpile grin

Stockpiling now. I'm only 80 so I reckon two jars of Marmite should last the rest of my life. I'm planning a Centenary Celebration feast of Marmite toast fingers with champagne.

Should I add a codicil to my Will naming the intended Marmite beneficiaries if I get Taken early?

O you wicked temptress... now I have to try it.

Galaxy Sun 05-Apr-26 13:08:57

Sorry but I heard some celebrity ( no idea who) talking about it on a cookery show and thought I am going to try that.
