What has happened to kiwi fruit?

I haven’t bought kiwi fruit for years but was tempted by on of those 4 packs. They are a strange light yellow colour inside and very bland tasting. Was I unlucky or are they now all like that? I used to love the bright green colour in a fruit salad and their tangy taste.

I bought 4 in a little pack last week and they seemed fine.
Ripe but not overly. I bought them in Tesco.
I hope you are luckier if you decide to try again. smile

I bought mine in Tesco too henetha. What colour were yours when you peeled them?

henetha Thu 21-May-26 10:05:43

Definitely green. I eat them like boiled eggs, with a spoon.
They are lovely aren't they.

You can get the yellow ones,we get them here. I think they are a different variety. They are supposed to be sweeter, though. More like a tropical fruit.

There are 2 varieties of kiwi fruit, supermarkets sell both. Gold and green kiwi fruit. The gold variety is hairless and sweeter. Personally I prefer the green one although the gold ones have more vitamin c.
Avalon I think you must have picked up the gold variety.

Maybe you bought what they call golden kiwi fruits.
These are a yellowish colour and do taste slightly different to the green ones.

I read that you can eat the skin. I did try - but struggled and not keen, but I bet they are fibre rich.

The kiwis in my organic box this week are very green and are grown in Italy. I wouldn't eat skins on non organic varieties.

Yes that sounds sensible advise.

I eat the skins (organic) but wash them well. I think there are kiwis that are red inside too.

So is coir matting! (Fibre rich!)
Too much fibre can be pretty indigestible - but good luck to those who like it.

I guess I must have picked up golden kiwi not realising there was such a thing. I’ve rummaged through my cardboard waste but can’t find the packaging. I will know to look next time.

I bought some of these the other day. Soft, squidgy and definitely no "tropical" taste.

Will stick with the regular ones.

Those are Golden Kiwi, a slightly different kind of kiwi, just as nutritious and some children prefer the milder taste. They tend to be more expensive

Kiwis used to be one of my favourite fruits and I also ate them like a boiled egg.
A few years ago I discovered I had become allergic to them. My throat almost closed over. Strange.

grandMattie Fri 22-May-26 13:53:17

Can’t stand them.
What about Star fruit? These have totally disappeared.

poppysmum Fri 22-May-26 13:55:24

Green is the best. I eat them like a boiled egg, but my partner just bites into them like an apple. Nothing left only the sticker!

Dreadwitch Fri 22-May-26 14:11:00

Did you buy golden kiwis instead?

Missiseff Fri 22-May-26 14:22:39

I eat 2 a day, always green and juicy

Nanny123 Fri 22-May-26 14:46:04

I find the same with Jersey potatoes they just don’t taste like they used to

Cabowich Fri 22-May-26 14:50:07

The golden kiwis are delicious - sweeter than the green ones which are too tart for me.

Jojo1950 Fri 22-May-26 15:23:21

Love the Golden Kiwi.
