This is a simple but tasty Malt Loaf

275 g Self Raising Flour
175 g Dried Mixed Fruit
225 g Dark Soft Brown Sugar
1 Tbsp (15ml) Black Treacle (I usually add a bit more than this)
Dissolved in 225ml Warm Milk
Pinch of Salt

Sieve together Flour and Salt
Add all other ingredients and mix
Put mixture in a greased (I line the bottom with greaseproof paper too ) 1 lb loaf tin
Bake 1 hour 180 deg (check after 40 mins as it can be quicker than 1 hour)

Sounds lovely, I think I’ll make this later today. Thank you

I know it’s not malt loaf but it’s easy and can be buttered for tea or breakfast oh and you can omit the sherry still fine .

Birdwatcher4 Mon 30-Mar-20 10:28:04

Sorry it’s not in grams showing the age of my recipe ?

Can’t make out the weetabix cooking instructions. A childhood friend used to eat buttered weetabix out in the street.

You soak the weetbix ,spice ,cherries ,sugar and fruit in the skimmed milk or what ever milk you use and sherry “optional” in a bowl for 30mins then gently mix in the egg and flour hope this helps .

While we are on the subject here is a recipe using Shreddies or All Bran.

We used to make a fruit bread using all-bran, dried fruit, tea, s-r flour and eggs. The kids referred to it as ‘bog-roll’.

geekesse Strangely 4 of grandkids love it 1 says it’s yuck ?

Daddima Mon 30-Mar-20 11:48:24

shysal I used to make this a lot, using mashed banana. It’s just about my level of baking skills!

If only I had black treacle and soft brown sugar ☹️

Fennel Mon 30-Mar-20 12:11:57

That sounds delicious NannyGran.
I've got all the ingredients, apart from milk, but will try it. I'll use orange juice instead.
No oil or similar?

Fennel Mon 30-Mar-20 12:12:35

Sorry NannyJan .

No Fennel no fats or oil

Thank you Nannyjan

I did buy some malt loaf bread flour years ago, so moreish we ate far too much of it, I think it was Wessex Mill.

To go off piste for a moment.
The son of one of my friends, decided that he would like to make a malt loaf.
He didn't have any malt extract, so decided to use Horlicks instead. Well he said, it is a malt drink!

Callistemon Mon 30-Mar-20 20:21:37

I used to love Horlicks tablets - do you remember them?

Auntieflo Wed 01-Apr-20 18:04:22

Callistemon, I used to love Horlicks tablets.

Malt loaf must be in the air.
One of our lovely neighbours bought us a couple of slices yesterday. Delicious.
