Good Morning class, here is today's teaser.
I have posted this three times and lost it! In more ways than one. grin

As usual, please don't post the answers, so as not to spoil it for others. You can PM me if you want to confirm that you are the class swot or not! wink
Good luck!!!

Five thieves were in a tavern and overheard a drunken shopkeeper bragging about his large collection of diamonds. Later that night, one of the thieves broke into the shop. He had a bit of a conscience (as far as thieves go) and only took half of the diamonds. But on his way out, he decided to take one more. After all, he was a thief. A while later, the second thief arrived. It was a night of odd coincidences. He also took half of the remaining diamonds plus one more. Shortly after, the third thief arrived and likewise took half of the remaining diamonds plus one more. Next, the fourth thief arrived and he as well took half of the remaining diamonds plus one more. Finally, the fifth thief arrived only to find that there were no diamonds left. How many diamonds did the shopkeeper have at the start?

Hint
Work backwards.

I also once received an award as ‘Manager of The Year’, for the company were I worked. . There were over 800 managers and I was rewarded, along with other category winners, to 4 days in Italy.

2 months later all Managers of my grade were made redundant .

Marydoll, that is fantastic. My word they do start them young in Scotland, but little ones absorb so much at an early age.
My favourite teachers at school were a Husband and Wife teaching English and French, also my Maths teacher, "if in doubt pop out" he'd say.

Marydoll Tue 28-Apr-20 09:36:28

CraftyGranny, I taught French and Italian in a primary school. Children in Scotland learn French from nursery and a second language from Primary six, which in our school was Italian.

My degree is actually in French and German, so I had to retrain as a teacher of Italian, as there was a shortage of Italian teachers. It was no great hardship! I loved it. grin

I did however mentor other teachers, especially newly qualified ones, when necessary, which is where the maths comes in.

I was at a wedding last year and many of my ex pupils were there, as friends of the groom. They were reminiscing about my very taxing and quick fire Primary 7 maths class and how intense it was! grin
Two are now teachers of mathematics. wink

some very disruptive pupils shock
Can we be expelled and then we can go and play in the park outside with the naughty boys from the grammar skool?

I want to break free

CraftyGranny Tue 28-Apr-20 09:01:00

Marydoll, what languages did you teach?

Marydoll Tue 28-Apr-20 08:32:56

littleflo, you sound so much kinder than HIME Scotland were.
Thank you for the report, but I'm so glad I'm no longer teaching.?
However, with great humility, I have to say that I once got a special mention in an HMIE report for the quality my maths lesson.? its framed for posterity on the wall

Does this mean that I will need to be on my toes all the time?
Oh dear, more stress.
I'm not a maths teacher, (I'm actually a rusty old linguist), trying to keep the grans occupied in these dreadful times.
However, it's more likely that they are keeping me occupied, for which I'm extremely grateful. ?

Doodle have been going to school for a while now. I sit at the back because I am shy, and because me mum made me speak proper, and I don't want to get bullied and I can eat my sweets without Miss seeing me.
Do you still want to be friends? (hmm)

littleflo Tue 28-Apr-20 08:11:06

No I am not from the posh school down the road. I am from Ofstead. . If a teacher says she would post an answer in one hour, it is only right that some jobsworth should be prowling the corridor after 59 minutes to ensure she meets her target.

You have received top marks, Miss Mary Doll. Here is a copy of the report.

“Effectiveness of leadership and management. - outstanding
Quality of teaching. - Outstanding
Outcome for pupils - Outstanding.

Summary.

Pupils in this school cover a wide range of age and ability. Despite the presence of some very disruptive pupils, Miss Mary Doll manages, with humour and a big stick, to encourage learning.

It is noted with particular approval the change in pupil behaviour outside the school. Previously, they were sneaking off to Tesco, visiting family and taking exercise more than once a day.

Now they are glued to their IPads and phones.

L. Flo
Inspector.

I suspect it's those boys, you lot sneaked in. There are some dodgy sites in the browsing history! blush ?

Er, who is littleflo? Are you from that posh school down the road? ?

Five thieves

ANSWER: 30.

EXPLANATION: The trick is to work backwards. There were 0 diamonds left when the fifth thief arrived. So that is how many diamonds remained after the fourth thief looted. Calculate the number of diamonds that were there before the fourth thief looted using: d - (d/2 + 1) = 0. Use this same equation for the other thieves changing the 0 to the number of diamonds present when the subsequent/later thief arrived.

Door key
ANSWER: Milo was TALLER and therefore had longer arms. Had the shorter brother, Noah, stood on the shoulders of the taller brother, Milo, he would not have been able to reach the top of the doorframe
