willa45 Mon 08-Jun-20 18:58:01

sorry..I was looking at my scratch from this morning....it should be H (3+7) then you move the H to the left of the equation and 2H -H = 10 and H=10

willa45 Mon 08-Jun-20 18:49:47

Squiffy, I'm guessing you already know a bit of algebra....

We are told that the (Husky and Poodle) represent the same value because divided by each other they =1, so let's call them them both 'Hounds' (for simplicity) and represent them with an H and we also have a Terrier (T).

We are given two other statements:
Hound + Hound = Terrier + 3
Terrier = (one) Hound + 7

So we have H+H = T+3
and T=H+7

Formula would be: H+H = (T+3) +7 but we already know that T=H+7, so let's use (H+7) as our value for T

H+H = (H+7)+10
2H = H +10 (move H to the other side of the equation and per rule we have to change the sign)
...... we now have 2H-H = 10 so H=10 (each Hounds =10, aka Husky and Poodle)

Therefore we have T = 10 + 7 so Terrier = 17
and we also know that the Husky and the Poodle = 10 each

Bathsheba Mon 08-Jun-20 17:58:41

*the same value

Bathsheba Mon 08-Jun-20 17:58:05

Your starting point Squiffy would have been the bottom line - 1 = poodle / husky. The only way to get an answer of 1 in a division is for a number to be divided by itself. So the poodle and husky would have to have to same value. It's just a matter of trial and error after that.

(God that was so much quicker typing that using grown up spelling! ?)

Bathsheba Mon 08-Jun-20 17:54:51

I fink yooz rite willa. Yoo kan av allidgees to wawnuts an uvva nuts wot gro on trees, but iz not yoojallee childun wot get it, oney gwoadups.

Puzzler61 Mon 08-Jun-20 17:51:24

Squiffy, if you think of the equals sign ( = )
being the middle of a seesaw,
the total values of the dogs on the left hand side (of the seesaw) are the same as the total value of the dogs on the right hand side.

10 + 10 (20) = 17 + 3 (20)

(17) = 10 + 7 (17)

(1) = 10 divide by 10 (1)

Terrier 17. Husky 10. Poodle 10.

Or were you joking?

Squiffy Mon 08-Jun-20 17:33:27

Could someone very kind please explain how to get the answer to the puzzle? I can’t even get started on this one! ?? Thank you! ?

willa45 Mon 08-Jun-20 17:02:12
