Not dried blood but red paint. The paint tin knocked over in the rush to steal the metal detector and the map. As the thief ran out of the kitchen, perusing the map, the metal detector scraped along behind him through the paint. Red foot prints led Jeanie and Logan to where the van had been parked. But it had gone. They ran to the beach where they saw the van and a person dressed as a clown standing beside it.....

juggling with some old bottles and singing an old sea shanty. He was gazing out to sea and as they watched a figure emerged from the waves. It had long strands of auburn hair and was holding a ...

... hand mirror and a comb decorated with seashells, which it drew seductively through its auburn tresses. "A mermaid!" Jeannie gasped disbelievingly, and then, even more incredulously, "PERSEPHONE???"

"Yes, I'm afraid your handsome black-haired Prince turned back into a horse on our wedding night," Persephone said, smiling ruefully, "so I've come to do what best mates do in these situations, and steal away your sexy Logan... or possibly whoever that clown weirdo is, if he's got more money."

That clown weirdo is the thief who just stole our metal detector and the treasure map, said Logan. And what's more, said Jeanie, I know who it is. It's Lydia Lett!! At that, the clown jumped into the van and drove off.... the wrong way in a one way system.....

Meanwhile, Logan was looking at this wanton mermaid with a speculative eye. He had always been partial to auburn hair and a fish supper so what was not to like? Weighing up his options he strode across the sand towards this tantalising vision while Jeanie was sprinting in the other direction, hoping for heavy traffic in the town so she could catch up with the van..........

Driving the wrong way in a one-way system tends to be frowned on by the Highway Code, so catching up with the mangled remnants of Lydia Letts' van was all too easy for Jeannie. She saw at a glance that DI Letts appeared to be dead - or was that red face-paint? - so she rushed to the back of the van, pulled open its dented doors and grabbed the map, the metal detector and an inflatable rubber dinghy which looked like it might be useful. But when she hurried back to the shore, she saw with despair that Logan was entwined in...

a mass of sticky tangled seaweed which held him fast as he desperately tried to run away from the enticing sea maiden. He remembered that last time he fell into the embraces of such a temptress he ended up on the front page of the News of the World. He thought he'd never live it down ...

... especially as he'd been swamped with sacks of fan-mail letters from frisky fifty-year-olds when the News of the World printed a close-up of the 'Gransnet Girls are Groovy' tattoo on his right buttock. He really should have kept a few of them in case of emergencies, Logan thought, grinning. But as he finally struggled free of the seaweed, suddenly there came a tremendous...

clap of thunder and a voice which said, "Prepare to meet they doom." "Friggin heck, I must have been speeding again", he thought and pasted on a sickly smile to try to talk his way out of things. A bolt of lightening flashed down and

huge drops of rain began to fall. Just as the storm broke Jeanie arrived on the beach. She secured the map and metal detector under a rock before launching the dingy into the choppy sea. Jeanie paddled furiously towards Logan as the waves threatened to overcome him....

and after much struggling she managed to free Logan's legs from the sea weed. Grabbing him tightly she lugged him on board the dinghy. Out of breath they embraced passionately but as the waves battered the dinghy with great force ...

and it was a job to keep the boat steady. They realised that the waves were partly caused by a big tanker which now was moving away. They collected their thoughts as the light shimmered on the sea then.....

...as Jeannie glanced upwards, she realised the light shimmering on the waves from coming from an alien spacecraft hovering just above the dinghy. They clutched the sides of the boat as it began to rise above the waves, and a dark panel slid open on the underside of the UFO. A brilliant beam of light dazzled their eyes as the boat was swallowed up by the spaceship, but as the panel closed behind them, leaving them trapped inside, Jeannie was suddenly aware of a strange....

sound. Music she thought but nothing like she had heard before. She felt lulled by the sound and she struggled to stay awake. Just before she fell asleep she saw ........

a strange creature, well, more of a large green blob really. It lumbered towards her with astonishing speed and began making the most awful, inhuman racket. As she opened her mouth to scream ...

a glimmer of a familiar tune assailed her ears. It wasn’t an alien monster, it was Elton John, resplendent in a glittery green suit with star sunglasses... ‘Like my new mode of transport?’ he bellowed above the engine noise.....

and started singing "rocket man". She had had enough of this and hit him with..........

the paddle from the dinghy. Elton lost consciousness, fell to the floor and rolled towards the door of the air craft. Logan took the controls while Jeanie gagged Elton. There would be no more 'Rocket Man'.....

... if she could help it. Now, how to dispose of him for good? If she opened the rocket door it would cause ...
