Not trying to tempt fate here but…

Which is the earliest UK number one hit by an artist who is still alive?

And a supplementary: Who is the oldest person still alive to have had a UK number one hit?

UK charts began in November 1952 for reference.

Dick Van Dyke- Mary Poppins soundtrack?

Oh Jim Dale??? Carry on actor!🥰

Yes! Yes it was. He’s wonderful isn’t he?
I remember that the much missed Pheonix mentioned that her mother went out with him back in the day.

And yes, The Power of Love by Frankie is brilliant.
I love all of Trevor Horn’s productions

LadyHonoriaDedlock

The song Georgy Girl was written by Tom Springfield.

As for the original supplementary, Tony Bennett is currently 96 but there's somebody still alive who is two years older than Tony.

Yes, and Jim Dale wrote the lyrics.

Sorry, LadyH, I don’t understand your second comment - do you mean someone who had a number one hit?
So the answer isn’t Tony Bennett?

I understand nothing ??

FannyCornforth Sat 25-Feb-23 05:44:36

Good morning MrsKen👋

Juno56 Sat 25-Feb-23 08:51:31

I took it to mean that Tony Bennett had the earlier number 1 (1955 I believe ) but there is a person who had a later number 1 but who is older than TB.

FannyCornforth Sat 25-Feb-23 09:23:34

Oh okay, thanks Juno
I wonder who it could be

Juno56 Sat 25-Feb-23 09:32:27

I guessed Dick Van Dyke with the Mary Poppins soundtrack but not confident 😕.

FannyCornforth Sat 25-Feb-23 10:10:48

Ah, good call. DVD is currently 97

henetha Sat 25-Feb-23 10:27:11

I had no idea that Cliff and Tom are so close in age. Thanks FC.
I'm trying to think of any singers/actors who are older....
than DVD, that is.

Callistemon21 Sat 25-Feb-23 10:34:54

Tom's voice is still very strong, unlike some older singers who should really give up.

FannyCornforth Sat 25-Feb-23 10:36:55

Could it be Jane Morgan who had a UK number 1 in 1957 with ‘The Days the Rain Came’?
She was born in 1924 and is 99

FannyCornforth Sat 25-Feb-23 10:48:19

She will be 99 in May.
Here she is receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in her heyday

henetha Sat 25-Feb-23 22:36:34

Wow. That's amazing. I remember the song rather than the singer. I don't think that can be beaten. 😊

Callistemon21 Sat 25-Feb-23 22:40:13

Goodness, it must be her!

Yes, I remember the song.

FannyCornforth Sun 26-Feb-23 07:21:20

Thank you smile
I pride myself on my general knowledge, but I had not heard of either Jane or the song itself.
I googled ‘singers born in 1924’ and went from there

Juno56 Sun 26-Feb-23 09:35:42

Well done Fanny that must be the right answer 👏👏.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Sun 26-Feb-23 22:50:34

FannyCornforth well done! It is indeed Jane Morgan. I thought that was a tricky one!

The song was originally written by Gilbert Becaud. Jane Morgan sang it in French on the B-side.

I had to look twice at this photo FannyCornforth, at first glance she had Spock ears - was it just me?

Ali08 Tue 14-Mar-23 03:57:15

Casdon,
Spock or Elf ears! Lol but it's her hair!

FannyCornforth Tue 14-Mar-23 04:03:53

Wow! Yes, elf ears! 🧝‍♀️
