This year is the 178th celebration of the tricolour flag in Ireland. It was gifted in 1848 to Thomas Francis Meagher by a small group of French women sympathetic to the Irish cause, intended to symbolise the inclusion and hoped-for union between Roman Catholics (symbolised by the green colour) and Protestants (symbolised by the orange colour).
Back in 1983 Air Canada passenger Flight 174 ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet. 17 minutes later Captain Pearson landed the plane safely using his experience of flying gliders.
