potatoes in containers

Being short of space I decided to plant potatoes in containers, 4 per pot. I followed the instructions but the foliage has gone crazy and is now twice as high as the containers (45cms)! Has anyone had this experience and will I get any harvest?

Hello SoNanny I've got the same here! I planted 4 seed poatoes per container (rubble sacks with drainage holes punched) and staggered the planting at weekly intervals to spread the time of cropping. As the foliage grew I rolled up a bit more rubble bag and added more compost...kept going with this until the bags were full. Like yours, the foliage has gone crazy, but strangely, no sign of any flowers yet.
In the recent very windy weather the foliage all blew flat so I have 10 potato bags with masses of leaves and it all looks a mess. I've kept feeding and watering but like you, am wondering whether any potatoes are growing.
I think I might tip out the earliest planted bag this weekend...just to see what's happening.
As there have been no flowers yet, any crop will probably be like marbles, but I'll let you know!

Don't be in too much of a hurry to harvest them. As a guide, wait until 2 weeks after flowering.

I planted some Charlotte potatoes in containers last year. They had loads of foliage, which eventually started to die down, after flowering. When I harvested, the crop was huge. However, my delight was short lived when I cooked the potatoes. They had a tough skin which split during cooking, and watery insides. Charlotte from the supermarket are a lovely salad potato, but not mine! Tried again this year with Vales Emerald, another salad variety, which has lots of top growth and flowers, so we shall see!hmm

Thank you guys! The raisedbedgardener site was very useful. I'll wait and see what the outcome will be, fingers crossed.

I decided to go ahead and empty first rubble bag of potatoes. Had planted 4 well chitted international kidney seed pots. Guess what? Apart from 2 'marbles' they were all well grown and the size you would expect for new potatoes, in fact a couple were bigger than you'd expect, so I hadn't cropped too soon.

However, in total, there were 13 potatoes with a combined weight of
1lb 1oz.

With the cost of seed pots/rubble bag/pelleted chicken manure/large bag of potting compost that's about £4.23 for a pound of potatoes.

Good job I'm on a diet.

I had the same experience as notsogrand - tried pink fir apple potatoes in a container a few years ago - certainly the most un-cost effective crop of potatoes I have ever had - about two Sunday lunches worth! More trouble than its worth. Easier and cheaper to nip round to Sainsbury's for them!

Just dug up our first root of potatoes. 2.1/2lbs which I think is good. We tried growning them in rubble bags and old bins without too much success, but now we have made a raised bed (saves your back!) and it is looking promising. Carrots almost ready, Sugar snap peas and courgettes ready to havest. Looking forward to tomatos and cucumbers in the next couple of weeks. Incidentally, we had our first significant rain since March 26th here in Norwich yesterday afternoon and evening and everything looks wonderful in the garden. Such Fun grin

How is Norwich gma? Moved from there 3 years ago and miss it. I still read the EDP online a couple of times a week smile
Glad you've had decent rain...I hope it prevents hose-pipe ban!

Hi Notsogrand! Norwich is still the best place to live!!! Changes happening though! Big developements taking place all over. M & S being expanded again and major alterations in J Lewis. Anglia Square to be re developed yet again!!! The castle and cathedral, Elm Hill and market are much the same!. Great excitement at Carrow Road, Premiership now, and apparently that brings lots of money into the area hmm Come back and have a look for yourself....

I was there the last time they went into the Premiership....very exciting!
