Signs of autumn

Noticed the first leaf-tinting, to yellow, on the silver birch that grows near the house this morning.

Back in May (23rd) we had an enormous storm here. Trees were blown down and there were power cuts. But the most noticeable effect on the trees was that the salt-laden water and ferocious winds killed the young leaves on all the south-west facing sides of the trees that were on the exposed coasts around here, so it looks like autumn already in some places.

Lovely walk with GS (2) and we spoke about the trees. He is now aware that some trees grow 'helicopters' (sycamore) and others grow 'drumsticks' (lime). His favourite though is Rowan's tree (his sister is Rowan) with all its red berries. All that plus a game of Poohsticks!

My autumn crocuses have been flattened (as usual) by a heavy shower. The leaves on the top branches of the rowans are a lovely russet.

A roe deer has eaten my Japanese anemones, as usual. Oh well, it was nice to see the flowers for a few days. There is a new bud. Maybe two.
They don't eat autumn crocuses.

Sure sign of autumn: note from the health centre about flu jabs!

45 or 50 house martins gathering in the field next to us. smile

Zephrine, I think you are right. We have had an afternoon of sunshine and showers and a brisk March wind.

Zephrine Sat 27-Aug-11 11:01:34

Hooray, it's spring!! smile

OGM I think I love all the seasons for one reason or another, but autumnal colours are my fav!! I go into raptures over a red beech, berries on everything else and conkers on the ground - I was conceived in the Autumn -maybe that's the reason?? Enjoy France smile

I am just hoping that Cornwall where we are off to at the end of next week is holding on to a bit of summer. we had a glorious week there last year at the same time down at Marazion. Perranporth this year and a visist to Rick Stein's and Paul Ainsworth's at Padstow so looking forward to thatsmile

My thoughts exactly Shysal..... there's a sort of smell in the air as Autumn approaches!
Off to France too Gally..... for the same reason. Sun on the old bones before the winter sets in, deters colds too, I think.
I don't even like Autumnal colours..... aren't I a misery.
I do love crisp bright winter days though otherwise it's SAD. Late spring is best of all with its promise of what is to come.
There that just about says it all, for me anyway!

shysal Sat 27-Aug-11 08:41:53

In the half-light this morning I was sure there was frost on the grass - hope it was just dew. Whichever it was, it's a sure sign of autumn, which I hate as it precedes winter.sad

Gally Sat 27-Aug-11 08:41:35

I always reckon Autumn starts the week the children go back to school which, where we live, was nearly 2 weeks ago and true to form Autumn is well underway. Although we have had a lot of sun, there hasn't been much heat so it seems that Summer never properly arrived - off to France next week to catch some rays before we batten down the hatches and await Winter and all it throws at us! grin

Absolutely drenched on the golf course yesterday had to persuade ladies to go in early they were worried about me as I was scoring well despite the rain - I get all gritty in poor conditions but I was desparate to dry out. All achy and stiff today and desparate to buy big woolies before the shops sell out. Definitely in Autumal mode.

The jays have eaten all the unripe, wormy apples off our tree.

glammanana Fri 26-Aug-11 22:55:23

All the windfall are droppping from the apple tree behind our garden wall just out of reach for us to reach, the plant's in the tub's on the patio have finished now and will have to come out this week-end ready for winter pansie's,thing's have not lasted long this year in the tub's for some reason,Autumn is here alright

Zephrine Fri 26-Aug-11 22:25:18

Three beautiful skeins of geese flew over the house today all honking away madly. About 15 - 20 in each skein. Definitely autumn.

Baggy Wed 17-Aug-11 06:51:52

For the first time in months — because it doesn't get dark enough in summer where I live, even when it isn't too cloudy — I saw stars when I went to bed. Cassiopeia. smile

Oxon70 Tue 16-Aug-11 11:19:10

I just found my first autumn spider last night in the house....

raggygranny Tue 09-Aug-11 13:37:36

According to the RHS website it is impatiens downy mildew, which thrives in wet weather.

greenmossgiel Tue 09-Aug-11 11:32:05

Our Busy Lizzies have just collapsed. Too much rain altogether, really, even though sunny days have been interspersed. Coldish last night, too.

Oxon70 Tue 09-Aug-11 11:27:30

My Busy Lizzies too....

jangly Tue 09-Aug-11 09:58:13

I couldn't understand how it could be slugs because I put pellets round them.
