Joys of Spring

Tramping up the hill
In the deep dusk
To shut the henhouse for the night,
I saw, even in the dim light,
Light buds on the apple tree
And, with the light of my torch,
A budding fresh greenness
At the ends of the flowering currant.
The bird cherry tree buds
Are swelling with new life
And the gorse looks sturdily leaved,
Ready to flower before too long.
If the bees have survived the winter in the chimney,
(the honey has stopped dripping),
They might come out for that.
smile

I am just outside Bristol. I STILL have no frogspawn! Why not? Have you exported all the frogs north.
I WANT frogspawn.
It is my human right to have frogspawn!
I shall complain to the human rights court in Brussels!!!

Saw the first little green gecko sunning herself on the wall today.
I like them when they are still, but don't like them when they scuttle away.

More frogspawn in the pond, and yet more in some of the permanent puddles by the field.

The jay had returned to my garden - last seen being shouted at by the robing, who is about one eighth his size. The weeping pear, in which we hang the feeders, is shimmering with blue and great tits. Very noisy!

This morning I have had robins, long-tailed tits, blackbirds and a cheeky magpie who came with a mince pie!! to dip it in my bird bath. One of my neighbours must be emptying their cupboards grin

The birds are certainly not in mine. Although, after the Garden Bird Watch we had a nuthatch and a fieldfare. During birdwatch we had 4 bluetits!! We have some daffodils, snowdrops and crocuses out but lots of shrubs are budding too. smile We even took the cover off the little two seat bench but now it needs a good scrub.

So all the birds are in your garden then, bagitha wink

bagitha Sun 26-Feb-12 20:35:43

The birds definitely think spring is in the air.
I could wish some sunshine were as well,
But it makes me smile to see
Dunnocks and chaffinches chasing about the garden
Blackbirds and dunnocks (again! we have lots!)
Settling on wood piles with their
Spring wing flick,
That flick which means "Look at me! Mate with me!
I'm fit! I'm healthy! I'll be a great parent for your chicks!"

The bird-table is now finished, positioned, half a coconut hanging underneath, sunflower seeds on the table - and is there a bird in sight? Not one!

Looks the business, though. smile

Just read your post bagitha and found myself just nodding my head. Great combo. of colours.

DH went a bit mad in the flower shop grin so now we have a huge yellow jugful of blue irises and white tulips (what I asked for) plus some red tulips (what he likes), and they're frilly tulips too. sunshine

Having just returned from holiday I was pleased to see first snowdrops and crocus out---- great ! I have just been out and bought lovely bunches of daffs for house they look smashing, although I did read in todays paper that the price might be going up because of the topsy turvy weather we have been having

jeni Sat 25-Feb-12 13:11:01

And to me! Murderz,!!

Oxon70 Sat 25-Feb-12 13:10:09

(Try having someone with drums next door, it's happened to me twice.)

Must be spring because my tulips have appeared....but this wasn't a joy because they came up UNDER the pots of other things I had put there to disguise the bare bed. So I've suddenly had to move them all!
However I will have that joy of tulips when they have recovered. I do actually plan to move them this year, as the visible bed is only looking nice for two weeks a year...............

bagitha Sat 25-Feb-12 13:05:47

How's your head, jeni? Been wondering. Forgot to ask.

bagitha Sat 25-Feb-12 13:04:06

DD1 (flute, piano) told us she'd always wanted to play the trumpet when DD3 started! Kids!!!!

Butternut Sat 25-Feb-12 13:04:01

whatsup - So did you get your daffs.?

jeni Sat 25-Feb-12 13:03:49

Sun is shining. Birds were very noisy this morning. Lovely blue sky. Waiting for dd and dgc to arrive. I could have an avatar moment wax poetical!
But I am a strong woman and will resist temptation.

Butternut Sat 25-Feb-12 13:03:13

I've recently had a fancy for an old-fashioned bird table, getting fed up with all the dingly-dangly-fill-me-up expensive bird feeders, so my husband has found suitable bits of wood that were hanging around in workshop etc., got going with a saw, found a bit of zinc dump-diving at the communal tip to protect the roof, and it is well on the way to being completed. No money spent. Big smile

bagitha Sat 25-Feb-12 13:02:23

Maybe that's why it sounded bad?

DD's teacher teaches other brass instruments as well and I think they'll find something between them. I'm keeping out of it.

jeni Sat 25-Feb-12 13:00:16

Dd. played hers with braces. I think she still plays, or did before dgc arrived!

bagitha Sat 25-Feb-12 12:59:30

Ha! Ha! jings! Love the breakfast coffee in the microwave. grin

wotsamashedupjingl Sat 25-Feb-12 12:59:18
