Joys of Spring

Tramping up the hill
In the deep dusk
To shut the henhouse for the night,
I saw, even in the dim light,
Light buds on the apple tree
And, with the light of my torch,
A budding fresh greenness
At the ends of the flowering currant.
The bird cherry tree buds
Are swelling with new life
And the gorse looks sturdily leaved,
Ready to flower before too long.
If the bees have survived the winter in the chimney,
(the honey has stopped dripping),
They might come out for that.

It's a day full of different and very busy clouds today, and I came across this from one of my favourite poets, Wislawa Szymborska.

CLOUDS

I’d have to be really quick
to describe clouds -
a split second’s enough
for them to start being something else.

Their trademark:
they don’t repeat a single
shape, shade, pose, arrangement.

Unburdened by memory of any kind,
they float easily over the facts.

What on earth could they bear witness to?
They scatter whenever something happens.

Compared to clouds,
life rests on solid ground,
practically permanent, almost eternal.

Next to clouds
even a stone seems like a brother,
someone you can trust,
while they’re just distant, flighty cousins.

Let people exist if they want,
and then die, one after another:
clouds simply don't care
what they're up to
down there.

And so their haughty fleet
cruises smoothly over your whole life
and mine, still incomplete.

They aren't obliged to vanish when we're gone.
They don't have to be seen while sailing on.

Translated by Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Cavanagh

Bags...if I could, I'd be with you in a blink of an eye. It would be such fun...smile

Lovely poem Baggy . I'm with you on the actua sailling. Far too many chugging and 'playing' at sailing around here too.
BTW. The magnolia is pinky/white with a dark pink base - lovely. For a small tree, it appears very strong.

Butternut Thu 19-Apr-12 07:15:18

Now that would be something! smile

Now I'm imagining a line of GN-ers, arms linked, standing by the shore, watching that wonderful old sailor. Then we can all troop up the hill to my house and have tea and buns, in the garden if it's fine, or inside round a fire if it's chilly smile.

Oh! Those days, long lost! I feel dismal and grown old.
Appologies to Browning.

Butternut Wed 18-Apr-12 20:56:49

We did too, Jeni, many years ago....... and canoeing. smile

Lovely! We 'sailed' all the time. DH was born in Scotland! Diesel costs money! Wind is free!grin

Butternut Wed 18-Apr-12 18:39:36

How bright, refreshing and skillful. I've seen it through your words, bagitha. smile
I would love to join you both!

bagitha Wed 18-Apr-12 18:15:36

It would be nice to watch it together too, soop! smile

SOOP Wed 18-Apr-12 17:12:40

bagitha I'm standing right beside you. Lovely! smile

A sail! A sail! A blue-edged sail!
Tacking, close-hauled, in long, narrow reaches up loch.
So good to see a sailboat sailed!
So many seem to motor up
Unsure, perhaps, of their sailing skills
After a long winter sleep at boat yard.
As spring progresses into summer
I hope to see again my favourite
Old yawl, skippered by an old hand.
Watching him with surpassing skill and elegance
Sail in and loosen sheets at exactly that moment
That the well-judged wind and tide
Will sweep him up to his mooring
Just right.
A delight.

I also have twice the rainfall of London, surprisingly enough, hence my rain gauge fascination! It just comes in deluges. As for W. Scotland - hmmmm probably not as much.

bagitha Wed 18-Apr-12 13:36:43

But not twice the rain of western Scotland, betcha!

JessM Wed 18-Apr-12 13:14:42

The rain here has a tropical quality about it... twice the rainfall of London!

bagitha Wed 18-Apr-12 12:55:00

And I live in a wet climate.

bagitha Wed 18-Apr-12 12:54:39

Chuckle. I'm familiar with all that. Remember, I'm and "older mum" as well as a gran grin. Enjoy the bus.

JessM Wed 18-Apr-12 12:53:01

Ah bags rain when you are nana in charge of 2 active little creatures takes on a whole new meaning. it is also a bit of a shock after 2 weeks of sun. More due tomorrow - I have a plan to take the 4 year old on a prolonged bus trip to the mall and back while his sister is at her friend's. Buses are a huge treat and I am the ONE who takes him on these transports of delight.
Could just go round and round on the free bus come to think of it... about a half an hour round trip, 3 times, that might work...
Humidity is sky high indoors. Trying to dry clothes... Trying to dry out the thick sisal rug that GD spewed on... yes well.

gally Magnolias are stunning - and now yours bears six blooms smile My parents always grew and cherished magnolias. I remember that in a park in Northants, there stood an ancient specimen...supported by what appeared to be several massive crutches. It was a joy to behold sunshine

bagitha Wed 18-Apr-12 12:25:14

gally, I'm glad to hear the magnolia is thriving. I'm afraid mine got nibbled a bit too enthusuastically by the roe deer. Hey ho! Another one to cross off the list. I could set up business in baby birch and holly trees though smile.

Butternut Wed 18-Apr-12 10:18:30

Jess - enjoy NZ and hopefully you won't notice if it rains!

I got drenched this morning in a cloud burst which came out of nowhere. I had started my walk in a bit of sunshine, but obviously this April downpourshower decided to get me! shock

Butternut Wed 18-Apr-12 10:15:04

What colour are they, gally? The shape of the tree and it's blossom is quite beautiful - is it a white one?

Gally Wed 18-Apr-12 10:10:03

Bags sad. It's pretty wet over this side of the country too but the sun has just briefly appeared through the cloud sunshine. John's birthday magnolia has 6 flowers which are standing up to the elements - blowing about a bit crazily but holding in there!

bagitha Wed 18-Apr-12 09:39:19

Two days and counting! Good grief! Sometimes it rains here for months! It might not be tipping it down all the time but during those times we don't see the sun because of thick cloud.

Two days! Tcha!

wink

JessM Wed 18-Apr-12 08:11:37

Yes I am confused too. What month is it? Nearly May? How can that be?
I am in Sydney NSW Australia until this weekend. Then to see DS2 in NZ for bout 12 days. Once I am there i will not want to leave of course sad Unless the weather is like it is here - still torrential. 2 days and counting.
