A lady by the name of Barrow posted last November - 11nth -it was, asking for advice since she is a complete novice gardener.
She had three replies!! That is all.
But the Joys of Winter has 619!.........

johanna Barrow asked for a book recommendation and was given four. Seems like a jolly good response to me. Question asked and answered. grin Why is that not good? confused

I started the joys of winter thread. Put it in the gardening forum because there wasn't another obvious place. Besides, some of the joy comes from garden birds smile. There is a lot on it because people like it. Very few questions (if any; I haven't checked) but plenty of enjoyment of nature.

The two threads are not really comparable, but I hope barrow got the info wanted.

O.K. Understood.
Just felt a little sorry for the OP.
It seems you guys know a lot about gardening, maybe I expected too much with your answers. I thought you might be all over the place with advice.

I think that I replyed and recommended a book that my dear dad used for years, there are many book's in the library to help when first starting and many ideas that can be taken on board so I hope that barrow feels she can pop back in at any time she feels she needs any more help.

I can't remember if I replied to barrow's question or plea. If I didn't it's because I think the best advice is to get out there and start. It doesn't matter if you make mistakes. Everyone knows how to cut grass, trim a hedge, pull things out of the ground that they don't want to be there, sow seeds. That's what gardening is. Just do it. If I didn't say that on the thread, it was because I didn't think that reply would be welcomed, but that is how I learned. Mind you, I started when I was twelve.

Barrow - I'm sorry if you felt the rest of us hadn't been helpful to you. I didn't reply because I'm a useless gardener! We had a big garden at our old house and employed a gardener, when we could find one and if they kept coming once we had employed them (or worse still drinking sherry in the shed!!0. When we moved we found looked for a house with a small garden that we could manage ourselves. When my husband retired we had the garden landscaped and got rid of the grass shock so we had the freedom to enjoy the garden without the tyranny of perpetual mowing. We developed a planting plan with a garden designer and she did the planting. Since then I have really enjoyed gardening and have changed more or less all the plants and how the various beds are used.

My point is, that I have done stuff by trial and error and planted what I fancy, where I fancy it and, if it fails, plant something else!

Also, every weekend paper has a list of things to do each week and, often, recommended plants for various situations, time of year, soil type etc.

Enjoy you garden - don't let is scare you smile

not sure we qualify as old ladies on this disreputable forum.
