Yellow birch leaves; first autumn tinting.

Noticed them on the tree outside my bedroom window yesterday when I got back from Derbyshire. Similar timing to last year.

Went for my morning walk through an avenue of trees today, looked up through a gap in the branches to see the sun shining on further tree which had patches of bright red leaves among the green. It took my breath away

There's something utterly glorious about autumn red leaves, isn't there, flickety?

WOW! I really should be cooking dinner but have been watching a barn owl in the field and alongside the garden smile. A couple of magpies were chasing it some of the time. WOW again!

Bags how lucky you are - they are so magnificent smile

Planted a brilliant acer today and a hazelnut, on our boundary. Rain arrived tonight to give them a good watering. Sometimes we do need rain- as much as we don't like it.

I watched a squirrel chase a magpie around the lawn in my aunt's garden the other day. At first I thought that silly bird should just take flight, then realised they seemed to be playing as they stopped and started again. It amused me no end smile

love Spring, love Summer, love Winter - and yet Autumn has to be my favourite. The brilliance of the light, big skies, amazing colours- and the hunter gatherer in me takes over - mushrooms, hazelnuts, raspberries and blackberries- wonderful.

Autumn colours make my heart sing

Flickety - Mine too. smile

Following several disappointing summers, Autumns of late have been getting better and better, so much so I find myself often looking forward to this season more than the summer. Just one downside, winter will follow!

Today the weather is absolutely horrible here - brief glimpses of sun interspersed with heavy downpours. It's gone dark again now, so we're in for a shower again.

Lovely afternoon though anno, sunny but a bit chilly.

annodomini Wed 19-Sept-12 17:21:01

As it turned out, Ella. I've been down to the pound shop and bought some bulbs for the spring pots. Also a new bird feeder, allegedly squirrel-proof, which I think they will just take as a challenge.

Love the colours of Autumn and walking through the woods with my grandchildren, kicking up the leaves.

Had to get up early as someone was coming to check the boiler - the fields were all white with frost! But it turned out to be a beautiful day - the beech woods are just beginning to 'turn'. Went mushroom hunting and found little of what I was looking for, but many clouded agarics, which I don't like. I picked a big basketful for one of my elderly neighbours, who loves them - and she was very happy. Lots of buzzards soaring and meewing - and I so enjoyed the walk, 'bolets' or no 'bolets' (penny buns or ceps in France) - hopefully there will be plenty around when we come back from UK - and the woods will be at their best.

Butternut Thu 20-Sept-12 22:08:06

I adore beech woods - they have to be my favourite. smile

What a fine day you had, granjura

Barn Owl hunting over the field while we ate dinner last night.
Goldcrest and Treecreeper hunting on the silver birch tree outside the window while I drank my coffee this morning.

smile B . The graceful silent flight and sight of a Barn Owl - lovely.

baublesbanglesandb Fri 21-Sept-12 10:27:44

It's a 'Misty moisty morning' here. The mist hanging over the valley as I drove to work looked magical and beautiful.

Nanadogsbody Fri 21-Sept-12 11:34:32

A huge spider-web strung across my gate this morning, bejewelled with dew drops. I was sad to break it thinking how hard the spider must have worked to spin it last night. sad

NfkDumpling Fri 21-Sept-12 13:43:08

Our garden was all wet, dewy and strung with cobwebs this morning. And blackbirds, we're suddenly beset with blackbirds. I would love autumn a lot more if it wasn't followed by winter, and would like winter more if it wasn't so dark!

Bags Sat 22-Sept-12 07:25:31

Frost.

Marelli Sat 22-Sept-12 09:40:29

Frost here too, Bags! Sky is a clear, pale blue. Blackbirds are whipping the rowan berries off the trees as if there were no tomorrow. smile

Bags Sat 22-Sept-12 10:53:08

The blackbirds haven't started that here yet, marelli. Won't be long though, I suspect.

Butternut Sat 22-Sept-12 19:37:15

Our blackbirds have disappeared, haven't seen any for a couple of months, and I'm wondering why.

LBJ's are in abundance though! As we swipe the crumbs and grains off our breadboard just outside the kitchen door, they gather there and bounce around happily. A constant source of amusement. smile

Swallows circling overhead on the coastal path.Thought they had left a fortnight ago- fabulous display!.There must surely be a little sunshine left in the month.
