Summer 2013

Gully streaks of snow remain
Now the hills are dark where rain
Has washed away winter's white.
Pond refilled and overflowing.

Taste of autumn in my snack:
A bread roll with cheese
And hedgerow jam,
Made by a friend from wild berries.

And summer has begun,
I know, because all day
I have had warm feet.

Dark sea reflecting dark sky
With sunshine slanting low between them,
Lighting sail and rainbow,
Budding trees and painted houses,
Daffodils and primroses,
Yellow gorse and greening larch,
And last year's rushes
In the evening light
Glowing orange.

I love hares too - just occasionally am privileged to see them here. Also glimpsed a baby muntjac yesterday.

Our wild peacock is in his new finery, displaying that magnificent plumage and calling for a mate. The pheasants are squawking, the male with his harem of ladies.

We have primroses in abundance this year, plus sheets of shining golden celandine on the verges. Next we have bluebells to look forward to.

Spring (long awaited) is my favourite time of year.

I can see it.

It is that washed light now,
With the darkness washed from the sky
And the loch reflecting
Blue sky and rusty hills.

Bags Sun 05-May-13 16:07:36

Old, old, woody ivy stems
Twined about a rusted post,
Enclosing it in a tight grasp.
I broke off the dead wood
And filled a log basket
With pieces for kindling.

Elsewhere I photographed
The ever-increasing primroses
That grow on our front bank.
For six summers I have left off mowing
Until the plants have set seed,
Until the mother plant has generated
Side offshoots, making ever larger clumps
In ever larger numbers.
My hope is, some year, to look on
A whole bank primrose array
Each May.

A surprise tonight, after a long day of grey
A blue, deep blue sky
Criss-crossed with con-trails
And buzzards flying high

An evening still
Waiting for full night
An even deepening blue
Quieting the day.

Bags Fri 10-May-13 05:44:23

Lovely, butty smile

And I have woken to a bright morning
After rain all day yesterday.
Pinks in the clouds
As I came over the glen pass last night,
Golds in them this morning.
And they are crossing the sky
The other way.

Gannets over the loch,
Gliding, plunging.
Clouds hiding the hills
That yesterday were snowy.
Light branches of wild cherry and birch
Swaying in a soft, moist air
That drips off the roof.
Old spruce, laden and colourful
With new cones and new green.

Pair of bluetits mating on the feeder
Solar fountain tinkling in the pool
Can this mean
Sun?
Oh! It's gone in again
Now comes the rainsad

Butty Tue 14-May-13 08:39:09

Lovely reading these. smile

Hope you get some sunshine soon Galen.

Glad some of you are getting summery weather and feeling so inspired. I've come back from warm WA to very cool showery weather here in the S of England. Went out for a walk lunchtime and wished for scarf and gloves (despite merino jumper, fleece jumper, hat, waterproof trousers and mac zipped right up.) It's not just me - we're well below seasonal average temp.
Looks very pretty and green - but a bit of sun would help the jet lag. And maybe even the poetic streak hmm

Your last line made me smile, jess. Hope you get some warmth soon. Just been out shooting a few arrows – testing my chest after a yuck cold. It's sunny but cool out after showers all day. The best bit was hearing both a willow warbler and a chiffchaff, plus the usual great tits and blackbirds, not forgetting the local cuckoo.

Time for some evening (fruity) tea.

JessM Wed 15-May-13 07:38:00

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May.
Summer's lease does not appear to have even started.

Butty Wed 15-May-13 07:53:56

Soon, I hope Jess.

Galen Wed 15-May-13 08:36:50

Can't take Shakespeare at this time in the morning when I'm running late for work![flustered] emoticon

Butty Thu 16-May-13 17:19:35

Aren't seasons miraculous
And contrary
Particularly this one.
All that growth
Green shoots, plump buds, then blossom snow.
No wonder imagery of Spring's so bright
Full with signs of renewal
And later,
Abundance.
It's all that rain.....and sunshine.

soop Thu 16-May-13 18:12:57

Erasing from the memory, the winter....dark and long,
Accomplished in a heartbeat when I hear the cuckoo's song.

Sunshine all day. Delphiniums racing up their stakes. sunshine
