We have a 10 year old apple tree which grew sideways, the main trunk meeting the ground! This year it got quite out of hand - we had hundreds of apples, but we could not really pick them beccause of the millions of wasps! Yesterday we braved the swarms and picked what apples we could, cleared away the mountain of windfalls and had a good hack at the tree - which has got so big it hides our fabulous view when sitting on the garden swingseat.
We "reshaped" ther tree to try and encourage those branches that are heading upwards. This involved actually cutting through the main trunk, which as I say grows horizontally and meets the ground, and leaving an upward-growing "branch" which is as thick as the trunk itself.
It all looks much better, as it is now a tree rather than a sprawl. I sealed the sawn-off ends to prevent frost, bugs etc. getting in the wounds.
Will it survive!?
It’s been a while so I will start us off…….whats for supper and why?
