Have I killed our apple tree?!

We have a 10 year old apple tree which grew sideways, the main trunk meeting the ground! This year it got quite out of hand - we had hundreds of apples, but we could not really pick them beccause of the millions of wasps! Yesterday we braved the swarms and picked what apples we could, cleared away the mountain of windfalls and had a good hack at the tree - which has got so big it hides our fabulous view when sitting on the garden swingseat.

We "reshaped" ther tree to try and encourage those branches that are heading upwards. This involved actually cutting through the main trunk, which as I say grows horizontally and meets the ground, and leaving an upward-growing "branch" which is as thick as the trunk itself.

It all looks much better, as it is now a tree rather than a sprawl. I sealed the sawn-off ends to prevent frost, bugs etc. getting in the wounds.

Will it survive!?

Wow, you had a busy day Mishap! I'll bet it will be alright. Apple trees can take a surprising amount of re-shaping. Wonder why it grew sideways to start with? Was it going towards the light? Sort of on the edge of a shady bit?

Was it supposed to be a 'cordon' trained tree? Am sure if it is a basically healthy tree it can survive its restyling! Give it a good feed! Might not fruit next year though if it is busy re-establishing itself!

What do I feed an apple tree and when please?

I don't mind it not fruiting for a year - we have been wading in them this year!! - and fighting off the wasps.

I have no idea why it grew sideway as it gets a lot of sun all round - but having said that it did bend south. It was not a cordon tree - I am sure of that.

More of a short back and sides than a restyling I think!!!

Take it out for a Sunday pub lunch.

Never once fed any of ours! And they've been going for forty-odd years now. Tbh most of the apples get binned. Got one Worcester, which is unbeatable (but doesn't keep), and use some of the bramleys. The others - prefer Waitrose' s. The trees make nice shade though.
