Three things

What three things have you enjoyed most about your garden this summer? Apart from the sunshine that is.
Early new potatoes delicious and full of flavour.
The lavender, so fragrant and teeming with bees.
Box after box of beautiful shiny blackberries.
What a fabulous summer this is.

Excellent advice Aka. smile

A nervous jay getting used to the birdbath and coming regularly.
The lantana which has had the best year ever after a Portuguese prune, encouraging loads of swallowtail butterflies.
Best of all having no paying guests in August so I didn't have to keep buying bedding plants to make the garden pretty when it wants to be dormant.

So let him moan, men enjoy a good moan.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 23:02:29

It's gone decidedly chilly out there today! I hope summer does come back.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 23:01:21

Oh right. #tempted

But DH would moan it's more to mow round. hmm

I'd better stick to recliner cushion on the garden bench.

Ana Sun 10-Aug-14 22:54:48

Same here, leave it out in all weathers apart from the cushions.

Aka Sun 10-Aug-14 22:51:58

jingl my swing- thing stays out in the winter I just take the cushions in. I've had this one at least 10 years and it cost £150 from Range in an end-of-season sale. Still going strong and the only thing I replaced was the canopy cover, again in a sale for £30 last year.

Our garden has been a picture and the crops (beans, courgettes, tomatoes, etc.) are doing well. All that is missing is the sound of two little grandsons running about - they are 8000 miles away! sad

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 19:24:40

Where do people put these swing things in the winter? Please.

etheltbags1 Sun 10-Aug-14 19:19:22

Ive loved my hanging baskets show this year. My nasturtiums have just gone on and on, I ve loved my lavender shrubs which have flowered well even though they were just cuttings from a friend a couple of years ago and of course My herbs have been flourishing.
I love my garden only wish I could afford to pay someone to do the hedge cutting and pruning that it needs, but despite that Ive spent more time in the garden than ever this year.

whitewave Sun 10-Aug-14 18:12:06

Everything this year has gone berserk so we are planning a big cutback this autumn - I think the water table must have been high from last winter

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 16:56:43

wink

mrsmopp Sun 10-Aug-14 15:38:08

Jingles smile

rosesarered Sun 10-Aug-14 15:24:15

The hydrangeas this year have been gigantic, so many blooms,
As others have said, lazing on the garden swing watching the birds [and falling asleep.]
Having so many meals out of doors. What a great Summer it is.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 15:09:58

I really thought 'blackbird' was spelt with an 'oa'.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 15:08:00

I can't spell.

mrsmopp Sun 10-Aug-14 14:11:54

Is it the autocorrect doing all these blunders?
Or perhaps you just can't spell? shock

TriciaF Sun 10-Aug-14 14:08:51

1. pumpkins - bright yellow and the size of medicine balls. I don't know what we're going to do with them though.
2. onions - very useful, and expensive to buy
3. got to give it to the weeds - they have excelled themselves this year ( I think it was someone on here who said it's as if the plants were on steroids this year.)

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 12:35:11

blackbird

I'll give up on this now.

As you were.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 12:34:14

It's nice when the blackboard comes, about four o'clock to find his tea.

And the robin's nice.

You can keep the brown leaves on the sweet peas. And the deadheads still on the perennials. And the shrivelled up nasturtiums.

Oh, and there's all the fallen apples and pears to look forward to now.

Great! hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 12:28:57

And I missed an "it" out

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 12:28:05

"garden" Not "hard n"

Why am I finding that kindle typo really funny? grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Aug-14 12:26:16

The best thing about my hard n since about the middle of June, has been getting away from. To other gardens. Other places.

Gardens, after midsummer, are, like everything else, bloody over-rated.

Aka Sun 10-Aug-14 10:22:08

I've partitioned a section of the garden off as my own area. I've fenced it and planted my favourite plants and shrubs though it will take a few years to mature.
My three favourite things are
1) it's private and not overlooked
2) I have an old garden swing I can relax on down there
3) when I am quietly lying on my swing all the shy little birds don't know I'm there and come out to feed.

suebailey1 Sun 10-Aug-14 09:35:53

3 plants new to us
Phlox
Sea Holly
Euphorbia

probably very familiar to seasoned gardeners but were new to pernennials formerly we just had a lawn and bedding plants in pots and hanging baskets.
