Growing ginger

Saw a flowering ginger plant online so thought I'd have a stab at growing one or three next year.

Can I buy a ginger root(s) from a supermarket and expect it/them to grow? Buying from a health food shop might be better, though the ginger roots may stay on the shelf longer. . .

It is a tropical plant, so I think you would have to bring it indoors if we are going to have a hard winter
I have never heard of anyone growing it, although someone grew a pineapple from the top of one and it produced a fruit.

Some years ago I grew a plant from a supermarket ginger root. It never reached the flowering stage, but I can't remember how or why it died. I suspect it may have been when my DS was left in charge of plant watering when I was away - a few plants met their Waterloo that way, including a large palm I'd grown from seed!

I have a ginger plant that has just sent up a flower plume!
I'm waiting with baited breath

I once grew a ginger plant from a supermarket root. It made a spectacular indoor plant, throwing up rolled leaves which then unfurled. It eventually outgrew its space, so I got rid of it before seeing any flowers. Good luck with your efforts.

Luckyducky I am sure it would grow indoors from a chunk of supermarket bought ginger.

Galen Is yours indoors or a conservatory or such like?

That will be my project for next year.

Off Topic I know, but i brought back a curry leaf plant from India, and grew it successfully until son did not water when we were away.

There is a company somewhere in E anglia which sell them @ about £12 a pop, cost 5 rupees in India.

The aroma from fresh ones are a delight

Wow Galen;

Would you have time to include in a photo in your thread? Do Gransnet allow them?

If the answer is no, would you be prepared to email me a photo instead? I love unusual plants.

I'm not sure where or to whom I should contact on Gransnet to find out. confused
