Growing Roses

Does anyone here know mush about growing roses. I have not ventured into this before. I want a couple of roses which will grow into a self supporting bush at least about 4ft high.
I look at all the sites and there are bush and shrub roses but I can find no clear defintion of the difference between these two terms.

I have recently planted a "rather vigorous" Rambling Rector rose! Paying the neighbours back for 27 yrs of their Leylandii. I did get to grips with the differences between ramblers and climbers.
Help please.

Nellie - I've been wanting Rosa Delahaye for years, love the scent and colour, maybe I'll treat myself!

Nellie, Merlot, Annie - I was so pleased today to see the sun had brought out the first two blooms on Geoffrey Hamilton. He has masses of buds this year they gave me a real boost!
Even Abraham Darby (who spend far too long being neglected in a pot) has some nice fat buds. Looking forward to the scent of both roses.

We'll have to remember this thread and post some photos when they all start flowering.

These are some I am interested in

Certainly softer colours yellow creams or pinks.
How does anyone choose, there are just too many! The more I look at the harder it is to choose.

'Margaret Merrill' is on my 'must plant' list this year and so is 'English Miss' with its faint blush of pink.

I'm hoping to create a bit of a white garden at the top end of a large border and as I grew these roses a few years ago I think they'll be ideal as I already have 'Iceberg' which is more of a pure white.

I have a few roses which I grow in tubs, most are hybrid teas, I never buy a rose that doesn't have a strong perfume. Hence my Margaret Merrill, which is white and has a perfume to die for.

All our efforts with roses come to nothing, and they are my fave flowers(no surprise there). We have sandy soil, and whatever and wherever, all roses are awful.Weedy, blackspot, rust etc and we always sprayed and fed etc.
so, sadly, thay have all gone now in favour of other plants.

Oh I will have a look. Thank you. The smell is glorious and it flowers its heart out every year. Divine

I'll try
Come oh thou traveller Unknown
Lo He comes with clouds descending
And love divine
And not Wesley but

whitewave, Could your pink rose be 'Albertine'? I have one clambering over a pergola arch. It flowers in June/July but is prone to blackspot.

Don't the C of E ever do any Requiem Masses, not even a protestant version? Here speaks a former Methodist.
I am clearly a non conformist aren't I. I will wander off to sing some good Charles Wesley hymns.

pompa Sun 20-Mar-16 13:54:17

Just bury them then - oh wait a minute, you tried that in the first place.

Galen Sun 20-Mar-16 13:14:31

No! I'm C of E

Nelliemoser Sun 20-Mar-16 12:53:20

There you go then Galen that where you've been going wrong! wink Did you not give the others a proper requiem mass?

Galen Sun 20-Mar-16 12:01:26

I've had no luck with previous rectors, church or rambling. Perhaps I should pray over it?

Nelliemoser Sun 20-Mar-16 11:23:54

Annodomini I bought my Rambling Rector and a new Mahonia from Fryers in Knutsford last autumn.
All shopping there is to the accompaniment of the aircraft accelerating into the sky over your head every two minutes. It does have a good range of plants though.

pompa Sun 20-Mar-16 10:55:37

NM, it is reasonably well signposted with brown signs, but it is down a very narrow lane, so don't think you have got lost.

whitewave Sun 20-Mar-16 10:54:52

I have a soft pink climber with a glorious fragrance always covered in blossom flowering only once in June but its name has been lost in the mists of time. Anyone for any ideas please?

annodomini Sun 20-Mar-16 10:48:18

Fryers' roses are also worth looking at, Nellie, even closer to you at Knutsford. I've had several from there and they've been good strong plants. One of them, a bit too strong, is a single yellow one that has got too big and attacks me with massive thorns if I try to prune it! Help!

Nelliemoser Sun 20-Mar-16 10:38:23

Pompa I have just found out where they are!

Just 47.1miles down the M6 and turn right! It's very slightly nearer than going to my grandkids and a darn sight quicker with a motorway to drive on. (hopefully). It's just near Telford.

I am all excited now I am going down thay way anyway in early June.

Galen We must compare progress on the growth centiles of our Rambling Rectors. wink

Galen Sat 19-Mar-16 11:47:05

The wonderful Gary has just planted my third attempt to get a rambling rector going. This time it's in the front alongside the grapevine

whitewave Sat 19-Mar-16 11:45:52

Last one in "Harlow Carr"!

pompa Sat 19-Mar-16 11:41:10

Nellimoser, just try visiting their rose garden, then you will really have a problem !!!
Their rose garden is huge and free, well worth a trip, just about everything in their catalogue and more are in the gardens. Very good cafe & restaurant (book for restaurant when you arrive)
The perfume from the roses hits you as you arrive in the car park.
We try to go every year, stop overnight at a Travel-lodge as you need a full day to see everything and it's a 7 hour round trip for us.

whitewave Sat 19-Mar-16 11:17:09

Just about to plant the last one! Absolutely freezing, but hope they do well. I was like you nell so in the end decided to restrict myself to one colour range and good disease resistance and excellent fragrance but there were still loads to chose- soooo difficult. I need at least a couple of acres instead of which I have to make do with a small back garden.

Now I want to look at clematis after Gardeners World last night.
