Onion/shallot sets.

I have just put this year's onions and banana shallots, grown from sets, into string bags for storage over winter. Many of the shallots and a few onions are way too small for cooking and I don't like them pickled. Could I use these as sets for next year's crop, or are they normally grown from seed?
I was a bit lazy about watering this summer, and the weather was cold early on and they just didn't grow, which I think all adds up to the puny results.

It's always worth trying a few, as an experiment, if you're not sure. Nothing to lose. It depends partly on what the growing conditions are where you live. Climate, soil type etc.
Where we live (SW France) people plant onion sets in November. They start sprouting in early spring (Feb-March) and are ready about June.
I don't think onions need much water, could be wrong.

Thanks Tricia, I shall try planting a few. They usually do well for me, growing very large.
