Weather- for gardening .... or not

Just checked, and here is a British Forum, and NO weather thread lol. One should really be added for sure.

Anyhow, 1000km away, the weather is awful, blowing a gale, rain bordering on sleet - yukie, yuk yuk. So glad we have spent a bit more money on booking the Tunnel rather than the ferry- all packed and ready to go. Let's hope the poor bees are ok- all wrapped up in 2 layers of bubble wrap- with a few vents to get moisture and air out. The garden has been put to sleep, perenials cut, roses halved to the snow doesn't break them - I shall next see the garden late March to early April next.

I've just come indoors after a couple of hours spent weeding the rest of the front borders. Here in my northwest garden there are few small birds around, just wood pigeons in their dozens. I could really do without them. However snowdrops and crocuses doing well and lots of buds to be seen too. The light is just so therapeutic as well. All in all, an enjoyable afternoon and a good excuse for some tea'n'cake.

Our chaenomeles bush is covered with bright red flowers, and I saw some celandines just appearing.
Otherwise it's impossible here to garden, it's been so wet.
Our 'drive', only grass, is dented with deep ridges from our vehicles. I managed to stamp one down today.

Cold here too. But we wrapped up warm and have been doing jobs outside all morning. Finished building a rockery and DH has dug out the foundation for a path. Loads of buds on everything. The daffodils and primroses are out. It was a good productive morning

Cold but bright so did a job have been putting off..25ft long flower bed that was too narrow have brought it out by a foot, and used the pieces of lawn that I removed to replace bare patches in the lawn, back aching but feel good?and the freshly dug soil is amass with all manner of small birds grubbing around.

Lovely day today so we gardened all morning. DH has had a really bad cold by said he felt better for being outside. We painted the gate, de mossed the drive and moved a few bushes. If it is nice will do more tomorrow. We really enjoyed today. Lots of bulbs coming up, though being new to this garden we don't know what they are .

Lots of bulbs up and looking forward to the snowdrops.

It was a delight in the garden today with sun and no wind. Pressure washed half of one of the terraces which now looks a lot better.
Tidied a shelf in the greenhouse. Geraniums still in flower.

Potted up two jersey lilies given to me by my sister. Be months befor they flower, in fact after the summer sad

I noticed today while fetching in the washing from a very frozen, white over, garden that the arabis on my rockery has flower buds. Some pots of bulbs well up too. I have no desire whatsoever to go forth and garden yet. And maybe not then!

whitewave Mon 08-Jan-18 18:13:01

Potted up some cheap amaryllis bulbs today and repotted tulip bulbs whose pot had got broken.

We need to move several bushes as soon as possible. Before they start budding. Just waiting for a dry day !

I Won't be doing anything until end of January then if it's a nice day I'll cut my grasses down. Plenty to do in the nice warm house at the moment (decorating)

Decided to keep to the greenhouse this week after yesterday, will start tomorrow if I have the time.

Fennel Sun 07-Jan-18 16:02:59

We've had a lot of rain recently and everything outside is soaked and boggy. Our 'pond' has actually filled up at last! It has been so dry up to now.
The only thing growing is a hellebore which flowers at this time of the year. Several starry white flowers.
Gardening here is exciting, but such hard work, as everything grows so fast and so BIG. As we're leaving we will never see that huge growth spurt in March again.

I'm knee deep in the lovely gardening books I was given for Christmas. Definitely a good way of staving off the frustration of being confined to a fireside chair thanks to the wretched lurgy.

Can't wait to get back out there!

Icy winds are keeping me indoors at the moment. One job I enjoy and will do soon is doing an audit of my vegetable seeds and ordering new seeds for this year. Later this month I will buy seed potatoes and set them out in a tray in the shed, where they will do absolutely nothing for two months, after which I will plant them.

Bitterly cold outside yesterday, but I managed ten minutes of an ongoing job, - trying to cut back a cotoneaster which is encroaching across a pathway. I'll do another ten minutes today.

whitewave Sun 07-Jan-18 10:52:52

Went out and started to prune the Bush roses, and clear underneath. Also tidied up the bearded irises.

Got bloody freezing cold and back ached all night.

I have decided that in January the only thing to do is keep warm. You can try and go out and do things but only if you have a warm coat, warm trousers, gloves, hat scarf etc.
So today I am going to put a stew in the slow cooker, start knitting a bright hat. And go through my seed collection.
I am going to be brutal and throw away all out of date seed packets.
I might walk to the allotment to look at it and perhaps prune an apple tree.

loopyloo Wed 15-Nov-17 15:10:52

Definitely weather for gardening today. Fairly warm, no wind, no direct sunlight. Have replanted some rose bushes and cut down a hypericum.

loopyloo Wed 15-Nov-17 11:52:50

Strange how you see different things as the weather changes. My daughter has some very nice grasses which look beautiful now. Am fighting the temptation to order a couple.
And the very thin conifer in the front garden has some berries on it for the first time. Must plant the tulips.

I reluctantly lifted the giant Cosmos on Saturday, which were merrily still flowering. They overshadowed the plants underneath and I suspect I have lost some.
I try not to cut back too much as insects like to overwinter in the seed heads. Also the frost can look wonderful on the dried stalks. But anything that goes slimy has to go.

Jalima1108 Sun 12-Nov-17 18:35:35

The roses and fuschias are still flowering happily - I should prune them but it does seem such a shame.

The pelargoniums in the pots are looking very sad so I hope they make some good roots over the winter. They're going to have to stay outside as the tubs/pots are too heavy to move so I hope it is not too cold to over-winter them outside.

Cherrytree59 Sun 12-Nov-17 18:29:56

Have put garden to bed except for a few red geraniums that are still flowering even though we have had a couple of morning frosts.
They still look so cheerful I can't bear to remove themsmile

Hilltopgran Sun 12-Nov-17 15:04:21

Really cold here on top of our hill, so after a short walk I spent some time in the greenhouse repotting. I can see people walking on the footpath under our house with babies in backpacks in the bitting cold north wind and babies do not have hats on, they must be cold.

Lots still to do in the garden, weeds never seem to stop growing even in winter. I try to clear overgrown areas over winter and there are always brambles to dig on on days when we can get outside. Still need to cut back the roses so they do not get wind rock, but they are still flowering and I am reluctant to loose the last bit of colour.
