Camelias

I love camellias, we used to have a lot ( previous house) and being evergreen look good all year.Only thing is, the white or cream ones do get brown and toasty looking flowers, it’s early sun after frost I think.

We have some ericaceous compost but I must buy some feed for it.
It was in a pot for years in ericaceous compost and used to flower quite well then leaf-cutter bees had a good go at the leaves! We then planted it in the ground (clay) and it struggled a bit although it responded to the mulch of shrub compost.
However, the flowers don't last, they seem to go brown within a day.

I will feed it!

Jalima1108, I've found the only way to keep our camellia well is to top up with ericaceous compost in spring and autumn, then to feed with an ericaceous liquid feed. Ours was almost in the camellia kennel in the sky after a bad winter a few years ago but is currently full of buds. Our soil was solid clay when we moved in many years ago and its taken a long time to improve it.

I top-dressed the soil around our camellia with shrub compost last autumn and the leaves have improved and are now green and glossy. However, when I inspected it today there are very few flowers and one that had come out had dropped off - still looking fresh and not dying off.

I like fuschias, they flower on and on and don't need much attention.

We moved ours. It’s much happier now in its new position under a tree.

Feed it, feed it and feed it again seasider. Mine looked sad a few years ago but the new regime has helped, it’s full of buds now

I love my Camellia but it only ever had one flower. My neighbour has one just over the wall and it's covered in flowers!

I love our Camelia, which has needed lots of tlc during recent winters. Our soil isn't good for Camelia type plants, so I pour ericaceous compost on spring and winter, plus water the plant with a liquid ericaceous feed.
Clematis and climbing hydrangeas are a joy in the garden.

I never had a camellia until we came here and I do love it but it is fairly unreliable for flowers. We have had one year when it has flowered profusely and looked glorious. This year most of what buds there are seem to be at the back of the plant so there won’t be much of a show. It’s too big to dig up. Mine too have frost damage this year. Can’t stand gladioli, and can take fuschias or leave them.

I like Camellias, I only have a pink one, about 4ft tall. It turns very pale as the flowers fade. It was already in the garden. But I haven’t planted another one, so I mustn’t be too keen.
My favourite flowers are roses, their variety and scent beats everything.
Clematis are my next favourite, also for their variety.

Oh B.B. I so disappointed, I thought I’d just picked up a new horticultural word.
Love our cream camellia, as for gladioli- fabulous. We grow them in lines in a quiet part of the garden and I cut them for the house.

Loggerheads? flower heads!!!!

In our new house we have six camelia. Pink,red,yellow and white. The red one is at least 8 foot tall. They are lovely when in bud or flower, but I am not so keen on the loads of dropped brown loggerheads
Everyone has them here. It must be the soil for them.

I like camelias and work hard at keeping them. After which they go yellow and now have frost damage. There is a house in the village that has a huge one covered in pink blossoms and I bet they neglect it as the garden is not really managed. Think I seem to be talking myself into give up with them! I also like hanging baskets, I keep mine to one or possibly two colours but I think the multi-coloured ones brighten up a really dull day. I remember visiting a really posh house and their splendid antique pots were filled with the palest pink petunias and silver leaf plants - very effective!

I like camelias and was very sad to see one last week that had been caught by the frost and was very brown and decrepit looking.
Fushias are among my favourites, isn't it good that we are all so very different.

I rather like camelias. Pretty flowers, glossy leaves. Cant see what’s not to like, but that’s how things are, we all have our own opi ion. And that’s ok.

Have one (red) camellia in a tub which I cherish. Love fuchsia, dislike gladioli. My least favourite shrub is forsythia. Find the yellow very harsh against spring green.

I dislike Camelia, fuschia, gladioli and petunia. Hanging baskets fill me with rage. I know it is totally irrational.
