You can reduce size in June/July when fruit has been set but it's just to control growth not to promote fruit.

Any drastic pruning needs to be done in winter as lemongrove says.

It’s the wrong time of year.We do ours in Winter.Now it will be full of blossom, which of course, means apples later.

My apple tree is 4 years old. It produced quite a lot of apples last year and has lots of blossom now. I don’t want it to grow too tall and cut the main stem a couple of years ago. But there are half a dozen “leggy” ones growing near the top ....
Can they be reduced in size by 2/3rds or is it the wrong time of year?
