Nematodes

I use nematoads for slugs every 6 weeks. Nematodes are sprayed onto the soil, I can't imagine how you would use it on your begonia corms.

When you say ‘grubs’ do you mean little slugs? I use nematodes but like petra spray onto soil.

I used vine weevil nematodes last year I and I did notice that the number of lilly beetles seemed much reduced.
If you look at the horrible creatures they both have similar larval stages and I suspect that the vine weevil nematodes may also go for the lilly beetles.
I talked to a representative of the company at a flower show but he was non commital about what I thought was happening.

They do seem effective in my garden

My DH buys this to treat the vine weavil infestation. It is very effective. Easy to use. There are very clear instructions on the pack.

I wish some beastie would come and attack the fuchsias in my garden. They are dragons!

What you need is a dose of gall mite. The bastard wiped out all my fusias last year ?

petra the original infested corms I threw away I was thinking about my other pot plants, don't think I can rid of the slugs and snails, far too numerous round here just have to be vigilant. I just hate the way you don't really know you have a vine weevil infestation till you see the plant keel over and when pulled up there are no roots! hildajenniJ, that was the one I was thinking of trying.

I don't know if you've tried the copper tape around the rim of your pots, it does work. I don't like the look of it on my pots, I prefer to do the dawn patrol in my dressing gown
But if you are desperate, give it a go. The slug nematode really does work.

I don't think gall mites would damage my fuchsias. They are dragons, uncultivated, wild dragons.

But thanks for the suggestion, petra. If I meet any gall mites I'll give them some encouragement.

Unfortunately I spent quite a lot of money on nematodes as I have a big variety of fuchsias. They didn't seem to work so I went back to repotting the plants every spring and checking the compost. If it was badly infested, I threw the compost in the bin. I just leave the hardy plants in the garden and they seem to survive fine.

I'm bringing up the subject of nematodes again as I'm trying to find out if it's the nematodes I've been spraying since early March or is it the very cold weather we had last winter.

Wow Petra, that must be amazing. Can’t be the cold I have a plentiful supply of every colour of slug!

I decided to give them a try and have now used on all my pots, what was left went on the borders. I will remain vigilant and hope for the best. I have not had many slugs this year although it has been very dry.
