Porch cleaning ideas

We have a large corrugated plastic porch roof and would welcome diy ideas on cleaning off the green stuff. Ideally would like something to spray on and hose off that is fairly environmentally friendly. Also have to climb ladder for cleaning. Need something easy at this age ? As said earlier any ideas are welcome.

I'd be interested too. When ours was new it was a regular brush just before a good rainfall was forecast, that sorted it easily. A few years of neglect due to severe lack of time and all we could do was replace it. The new corrugated plastic is easier to clean so far with just a brush but I keep thinking if we start slipping with the brushing off again or stop being able to reach, how do we manage it.

We bought one of those soft brushes for cleaning caravans and that was ok for a while but age catching up with one is now finding it heavy to manoeuvre while up a ladder, especially if you have the hose pipe connected to it. Dragging off the moss is not so bad it's the green algae stuff that is the problem.

I used bio washing powder on my path and it has worked a treat

I bought spray and leave from a shopping channel when it was on offer....fairly good results...they say it takes a few months to completely clear the algae...so hopeful...but i will probably get my Karcher out at the end of the season if it still looks drab....good luck also will follow other responses to this question!

Try washing up liquid plus some bleach in warm water plus some bleach and use a scrubbing brush. I get green stuff building up in rubbery bits on car windows which looks unsightly and this works on those. I think this would work.

Power wash?Google cleaners to spray on in advance.
Another possibility might be “Wet and Forget”

I would do like with my teak garden table and chairs : douse it with bleach, let it dry in the sun, just a good rinse et voila.

Power washer. I use it every year on the green stuff and general dirt on the conservatory and greenhouse. Its fun too!

I use Kilrock Descaler spray which works very well in mostly everything but there may be some scrubbing involved! Spray it on and leave 5-10 minutes. Good luck!

Enjo, though quite expensive and bought from an agent is absolutely great

Yes, Wet and forget. Although mine has been fine since I asked the window cleaner with his high reach brush to swab it down. It has been fine ever since. I think it is the pure water they use.

Soda crystals, protecting any plants in the area, sprinkled over the green then a light spray of water to moisten the crystals. I would leave it at least seventy two hours for it to do its work Then if no rain forecast which would wash it away get a hose on it. I use this method on my patio.

Alternatively, consider it patina and leave it alone. I have a rear extension wisth a similar roof. It was uncomfortably hot in the summer until the 'green stuff' became well established.

Is there an upstairs window that overlooks it? (Don't fall out of the window...)

There'll be small ads for people who offer a service.

As marieeliz says, we asked the window cleaner to wash ours down. She did not charge much extra either. Very labour saving indeed.

I have used washing soda crystals very successfully to get rid of moss and algae on my path. I just sprinkled it dry, left it a few days and then hosed it off. On the roof it might be easier to make a solution and spray it on, you can get large sprayers quite easily from garden centres. After a few days just hose it off. The packets of crystals only cost 69p so we're much cheaper then moss killer from the garden centre and less harming to the environment and water drainage system.

Possibly the cleaners for the staining on the patio slabs - here in France it is Mousse cleaner - you just spray (or in my case use a sweeping brush to apply it and leave it.
The soda crystal idea sounds very interesting - I think I might give that a go on some of the patio slabs and see how it works - using a Karcher type thing eventually washes off the finish of the slabs.

I've had a go today with fairy liquid and scrubbing the best I can with a long handled mop and then hosed it off. It wasn't very successful and I got tired and grumpy. I think I'll try the soda crystals. I can safely spray that on from the bedroom windows and if I'm not happy with that I think I'll try Wet & Forget or something like it. Thank you all for your suggestions and ideas.

I could not do the job myself, but my lovely window cleaner did the work for me at a small charge.

Power wash and perhaps use a preparation meant for cleaning algae of boats.

Deni1963 Sun 13-May-18 18:11:51

My window cleaners do mine ?

I use white vinegar on my tarmac driveway to get rid of moss and weeds. So I think it would probably work on all surfaces

I use Wet & Forget Outdoor Cleaner. Most of the time, no scrubbing is needed.

We have used Algon in the past. Dilute and leave on, but not when rain expected.
