Identifying a plant

I have two bushes/small trees that have very strange flowers. The flowers are flat on the top and have a narrow outside rim of small white flowers with the centre being full of very very tiny flower heads. The blooms look like a plate with a white rim.

That is a name I haven't heard for a long time - Guelder Rose!

Here's the spring back or close,
When the almond-blossom blows:
We shall have the word
In a minor third
There is none but the cuckoo knows:
Heaps of the guelder-rose!
I must bear with it, I suppose.

Robert Browning
A Lovers' Quarrel verse XVIII

Brilliant! - well done collective plant detectives!

NanTheWiser Fri 25-May-18 18:21:00

Nandalot has got it! Having seen a close-up of the flowers, Guelder rose immediately sprang to mind, so there you have it - Viburnum opulus.

Glad that's sorted...

Your picture reminded me of my childhood Fairies of the Flowers and Trees book and He Guelder Rose.

I googled Guelder Rose and the picture looks similar. Hope link works.

I do see what you are saying Nan - it is interesting. The leaves clearly do support the oak leaf lobby, but the flowers of the oak leaf variety are slightly different - the centre "buds" in my plant never do open to form a whole bloom ( as many of the photos of the oak leaf variety indicate) - what you see in the photo here is how it is throughout its whole blooming period.

It is also much more like a tree than a bush.

It is very lovely!

Jalima1108 Thu 24-May-18 18:22:50

actually, you're right, the leaves are oak leaf shaped NTW

NanTheWiser Thu 24-May-18 18:17:17

I don't really think so, Luckygirl - the leaves are smooth edged, yours are definitely dentate, so I stick by H. quercifolia (I'm very stubborn... grin)

Jalima1108 Thu 24-May-18 18:15:04

I like hydrangeas (any type) and have just bought a 'blue flower' one for DH but have planted it in a large pot because in our soil it would change to pink.

Luckygirl Thu 24-May-18 17:35:40

Mind you - mine is more tree-like than bushy, but presumably it is a variant - the flowers are spot on.

Luckygirl Thu 24-May-18 17:34:11

Thank you all for pointing me in the direction of hydrangeas!

Luckygirl Thu 24-May-18 17:31:59

I've found it!!!! It is Hydrangea arborescens Haas' Halo:

Yes Jalima the leaves are very distinctive on this species, unlike ordinary Hydrangeas. It is only just starting to flower, and the centre of the panicle will slowly develop into a drooping cone of flowers. It's also renowned for its Autumn colour.

Mapleleaf Thu 24-May-18 15:36:21

I must admit, I've never heard of an oak leaf hydrangea before. ?

Jalima1108 Thu 24-May-18 14:51:01

The leaves on yours look like an oakleaf hydrangea, as NantheWiser said.

Jalima1108 Thu 24-May-18 14:49:32

My climbing hydrangea looks a bit similar and is just starting to flower, but it is not a self-supporting shrub. The centre is greenish-white rather than brown though.

Mapleleaf Thu 24-May-18 14:15:28

I'm not sure what it is, Luckygirl, because from your picture, the leaves don't look like the leaves on my mop head hydrangea and as shysal says, it's still a bit early for them to be in flower here. Whatever it is, though, it looks very pretty.

Jalima1108 Thu 24-May-18 13:14:19

Your hard work is paying off Luckygirl

Jalima1108 Thu 24-May-18 13:13:41

I should get out and do a bit more in our garden.

And I have summerhouse envy

Luckygirl Thu 24-May-18 13:10:13

Thanks Jalima - I am novice gardener and have worked very hard on it and feel quite pleased with the result.

Jalima1108 Thu 24-May-18 13:03:33

I don't know - but what a lovely garden!!

Elegran Thu 24-May-18 12:45:35

The outer flowers are really just bracts, the real ones are the tiny ones in the centre plate.

Luckygirl Thu 24-May-18 12:40:39

Just looked at some pics of that and it is similar - but my flat circular blooms are not quite the same. The middle of the bloom has such tiny flowers that it looks as though there are none - then it has these white florets all round the rim.

NanTheWiser Thu 24-May-18 12:34:31

I think it looks like the oak-leaf Hydrangea - Hydrangea quercifolia.
