Shade-loving plant for tub

There is a large fixed wooden tub against a wooden fence in our garden. It is underneath a big maple tree. I have tried various plants in there but they do not like it. Can anyone suggest anything that might do well in the situation?

Both the tree and the fence put it in the shade. There is a trellis above the tub, going up the fence.

Could you try an evergreen clematis there? Lots of plant lovers will give you better ideas. Good luck.

Ferns
We have quite a few different ones.
DGS love them as they are Dinosaur plants!smile

Ah, ferns - hadn't thought of that!

Dh has a fern fetish (could be worse fetishes I suppose!) and we have lots of different ones in our shady border. Because I find them slightly boring I've added foxgloves and some solomon's seal and Jacob's ladder.

I can't remember what the stuff in the front is!

Solomon's Seal is good in shad e. It is like a 2ft high lily of the valley without any scent.

Beware! Solomon’s Seal is best kept in a tub. I planted a small clump and the bloomin stuff is now lushly everywhere! It doesn’t last long though and nothing, but nothing else will grow through it. Weed free. I need my DS to come over with an axe to chop it out!

I have a bed under a walnut tree where I have ferns, hostas and hellebores and it’s very lush. For a tub I would suggest a shuttlecock fern which more or less vanishes in winter, and hellebores as their flowers need a bit of height to appreciate.

A Montana clematis would love it there too and could go up the trellis and into the tree. A flowering maple!

Climbing hydrangeas love the shade.

Woodland plants like foxgloves, bluebells are ok, some fuchsia are shade tolerant, mahonia, hosta, spring bulbs, azaleas and rhododendrons can flourish.

Thanks for all your help - brilliant! smile

Kitty, the plant in front is a Brunnera, possibly 'Jack Frost'. I have a few Brunneras in my shady border, as I love the leaves and small blue flowers in spring.

I have bought a couple of ferns with interesting foliage for the tub - hopefully they will live!

How about a mix of Hostas ... altho the slugs like them.

Anniebach Sun 03-Jun-18 19:16:15

I love Hostas , wish slugs didn’t

Coolgran65 Sun 03-Jun-18 19:34:10

I have loads of various hostas, they never fail.

I really actively dislike hostas! I got rid of several - they went to the local park gardeners, so others who like them will have that pleasure.
