Pruning weigela

I’m about to prune mine as it’s just about finished flowering. I made the mistake of giving a trim earlier this year consequently hardly any flowers as it blooms on last years growth I’ve since discovered. Doing it now means plenty of time for new growth for next season.
As long as still remember my mistake this year ??

After it’s finished flowering. Then it will flower next year on this year’s growth.

You can either just reduce the height overall, or if you want to rejuvenate it and encourage new growth from the base if the shrub, take a third of the stems out st the base for 3 years.

Thanks for info. Mine flowered well this year, but there’s now lots of new growth (see first pic) and I’m not sure if I should cut those back, or if they’re next years flowering shoots?

sally this is the rhs advice for pruning early-flowering shrubs.
If you do it now it should be ok.

Mine has only just come into flower.
It’s about 6’ tall.

I cut mine back hard in early April (bare stems) to do a job behind it. It has come back really bushy although I'm not expecting it to flower but will enjoy the lovely colour leaves.

I went in blind with mine as I only put it in last year and had no idea how to prune it, so, like Beechnut I cut it back fairly hard to give it some shape and hoped for the best. It has flowered really well, so I did something right for a change! I have the RHS book of pruning and training but find it very comfusing, so I veer toward the “shut your eyes and go for it” school of pruning !
