Growing flowers from seed

I am just getting into this gardening lark and am thinking of getting a raised cold frame.

Can someone please let me into the secret of the basic principles of growing flowers from seed? When to plant? Light or dark conditions? When to plant out? When they might flower?

I planted cosmos last year and they were just lovely, flowered well into October. Does anyone know if they seed themselves and will come back in the spring or do I have to start over and plant new seeds?Thank you

They are annuals, sow them every year - they are great.

Last year I had a lot of self sown marigolds (common or garden, not African) springing up - there are still a few flowers out even now!
So for something easy and hardy, I’d certainly recommend scattering some of those seeds in a suitable spot. The bed where mine have flourished gets quite a bit of sun, but does tend to be very dry (not at the moment of course, after all the rain!)

I am very fond of Cosmos because of all the beautiful colours and the fact they flower for so long, into the first frosts. I always bought a new packet every year but after looking at mr google I saved this years seeds in a paper bag and will plant these next year.

This year I sowed Cosmos. Rather late in the year but excellent result .
Beautiful white flowers.
Even if you grow one thing it's fascinating.

I'm not great at gardening but I love seeing cuttings take, I take cuttings and pass them on when rooted and established, keep some myself but its almost an obsession I take more than I can use.
Havnt been lucky with seeds unless its marigolds or foxgloves that I throw back in the ground.
Still get tempted by the packets and give it a go
