Propagators

I have recently bought a few half size propagators to use for bedding plant seeds. They have a compost tray with drainage holes and a plain gravel tray beneath plus a ventilated lid.
I have never used any of these. I have sown Verbena Bonariensis and Nicotiana so far. They are indoors next to a south facing window, or could that get too hot? I am watering with a spray but I don't know in what position to put the top vent. Also should I water the gravel below?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I use propagators (heated ones) indoors on sunny window sill - and start them off with vent closed. When seedlings start to come up, I open the vent. Once the seedlings have got a bit bigger, I take off the lid during the day, so they don't get too hot in the sun, but put the lid on again at night.

Once the seedlings appear do not them sit with water on their leaves or they will fry!.
Water from below and allow to drain
