Our weed of a lawn

Next time you weed and feed, rake the lawn once the weeds and moss are dead and get all the dead material off the lawn then go over it with an aerator, (you can hire mechanical and powered thatch removal and aerator equipment) spread lawn sand and then spread that mix of seed and nutrients you can get to reseed the lawn.

Alternatively do what we did we did. We contacted one of those grass care companies, you see their little vans every where and they have names like Green Care, Green Sleeves, Green grow the rushes O etc. They charged £150 for their first visit when they dethatched our very large lawn (50ft x 100ft), aerated it and weed and fed it, good half days work. They now charge £50 once a quarter to give it a weed and feed.

Our lawn that was 50% moss, 50% max grass is now, green and 100% grass. Between visits, if any big weed like a dandelion appears I spray it with a spot lawn weeder, otherwise I leave it to the two nice men that deal with everything else to do with the lawn (except cut it) for me.

My neighbour has laid artificial turf.....looks lovely . And no maintenance, except an occasional hoovering and watering down , to clean it.

Please, please, don't buy that dreadful artificial turf. Even putting down gravel and pots is better than that - at least insects can live there.

Our lawn is full of weeds but it looks OK when it has been mown. I like daisies so we don't have the Weed and Feed people come to treat ours now.

ps they also managed to kill off my one cowslip which appeared every spring so no more weed and feed for us.

Embrace your weeds! Think of them as wild flowers which will attract insects and therefore birds to your garden. A bit of moss will be a good habitat too - much better than bowling green type grass. Of course if you are planning to have a bowling green, a tennis court or a golf course in your garden, you will have to go for the manicured look, but otherwise, relax!

I agree weeds are wild flowers. Let them grow. We are destroying everything.

Weeds are just plants in the wrong place.

Or the right place depending on your point of view.
That is my excuse for a weedy lawn.
Luckily, many of my neighbours agree.

We have artificial turf, because my husband could no longer manage to do the grass cutting and edging. It has been down nearly 3 years now, and has been a blessing. We have trees, flowers and shrubs and birds nest in the ivy on the fences.
I know lots of folk do not like the idea, but it suited us and our situation, especially as this year DH was diagnosed with prostate cancer, plus he will be 80 in June.

Our grass at the front is on a slight slope. Consequently a lot of it disappeared during the drought last Summer. That, and our use of weed and feed, when it turned out there was more weed than grass. So, bare patches ensued.

BUT, I am now doing "no cut May" in the whole of the garden. ie grow your own hay meadow. I am now finding a lot of the herbs from the actual garden have self seeded where the grass should be.So I will go over the remaining grass with shears at the end of the month and then add a few more colourful herbs, perhaps even camomile (Camomile Lawn - right?), and dot some of those ornamental circular paving stones around at strategic points.

That's the plan.

Your garden does look lovely Auntieflo. Mine on the other hand could well look - odd. Never mind.

You could do what we do - ours is at least 50% weeds and moss - and call it a wildflower meadow, instead. I have been known to tell dh when mowing to leave a large patch of buttercups to grow and flower, because I like them. Some time ago we did try weed and moss killer, but the resulting dead patches looked infinitely worse.

If it makes you feel better, a relative of dh has a beautiful 17thC chateau in France. There are extensive gardens, with a lot of lawn. And guess what? The ratio of weeds to grass is probably rather higher than ours.
The owner gives not a toss. It gets mown regularly, and that's it. As long as there's no drought with a watering ban thrown in, it looks fine.

CrazyH thank you. Yes, DH has had a course of tablets and one implant injection, so far. He is due to have radiotherapy and that is scheduled to begin next month.

As long as it's green I don't care- I like the flowering weeds that bloom each Spring- We picked up a mulching mower and ever since we did it's really filled in-

I understand your problem and had the same some time ago! I even couldn’t see my flowers on the backyard because of weeds.
Our neighbors advised us to buy a trimmer. They said it is a fast and easy way to get rid off weeds. Anyway, I didn’t have any experience and didn’t know what trimmer I need.
So, they also sent me this article with the comparison of trimmers.
It made my choosing easier.
