Lilies

tried to grow my favourite wild Jura lillies in the UK - bulbs cost a bomb and very hard to find. But to no avail- got some lovely ones here now, and they are in flower all over the high meadows. Martagon lillies or Turk's Caps.

Beautiful flowers ladies. My Crocosmia, I have three are just starting to flower.

Up thread I bemoaned the fact that our lilies had suffered due to the cool, damp conditions.
At last they have started flowering. Our crocosmia is nowhere near, just a bunch of leaves at present. It usually flowers at the end of summer.

Today I've noticed that the montbretia flowers are starting to come out .
It's good to have some colour - there was lots of bright blue periwinkle but they've been flattened by the heavy rain.
Some new roses too.
I don't know much about flowers, more about veg.

Crocosmia, the common orange one, doesn't bloom until the end of the summer in my neck of the woods although the vibrant red one (Lucifer) should be flowering soon.
Fennel, don't worry about the lack of flowers, Just be patient.

We had lots in our last garden, almost a weed, and I think we have the same here, but no flowers.
So it's not from the Lily family, but a kind of Iris.

I wonder if it's Montbretia (Crocosmia), Fennel?

They're the right colour, but the ones I mean have spikes of very small orange flowers.

Do you mean Day Lilies (Hemerocallis) Fennel ?

Can anyone remember the name of this type of lily ( think it's a lily), it comes from a bulb/corm :
Foliage long spiky green. Flowers small and orange, several arranged up a stem. It's very common.
We've got some in our 'new' garden but no flowers yet. Maybe I should use some fertiliser.

If you catch it straightaway Greyduster, sellotape works....

I have to warn everyone who goes past them to be careful of the pollen - I got a bit on a white fleece pullover the other evening and had to use bleach in the end to get it out!

These are a couple of my lilies. The dark red one has no leaves, all having been decimated by lily beetles, but the flowers are lovely. The snail was just resting! I heaved him over the garden wall! He will have had a soft landing.

Spray with Provado now and then, or Fairy Liquid in warm water.

Besides, they get scent of the lilies and head back again! ?

Isn't shifting Lilly Beetles or Vine Weevil up the road just shifting your problem onto somebody else.

Both will annhialate Lillies and many other plants if not dealt with and annhialate is not too strong a word.

I pick the lily beetles of an squash them before ( hangs head in shame) reaching for the provado. They are the only plants I spray and usually only need it once a year.

Meant to say - spray under the leaves too. IMPORTANT. My lovely black lily has no beetles!

Beetles love the smell of the lilies. To mask the scent of the plant use blended/crushed garlic filtered into a spray bottle.
Mix in some washing up liquid to make it foam and stick to the leaves for longer and apply it fairly regularly.

Crush a couple of cloves - diffuse in 1/2 cup of boiling water.
Leave for 5 mins and filter/strain before putting in the bottle. Keep it in a sealed jar for next time.

ev just googled them. Love their metallic colours. Beetles are just lovely.

Ooh, jealous, WOODMOUSE49 - love those dark lilies!

These have so amazed me. I buy bulbs every year and the 3 bulbs I bought from Morrisons for £2 have produced this gorgeous black lily. Wish I'd kept the label.

I'm waiting patiently for the buds to open on my pot planted lilies there are about a dozen buds just waiting to open.
