Annuals as cut flowers, and update on gardening jobs!

I've just received my Creeping Phlox plug plants from T&M, a bit earlier than expected.
There are 60 of them in pink, red and white strip, blue, and lilac. All in good nick, so I've just spent the evening potting them up. In a day or two's time I'll put them into the conservatory which has no heat.
Then outside for a short while.
They are on the way to a raised bed, that I hope they will spread and fill.
I've never grown them before, but I am looking forward to the colour and scent in the garden!

Next I will plant some seeds, probably Cosmos, which I also haven't grown before, but I want something reliable for cutting for the house.

Anyone advise annuals for that purpose?

The year is skipping along!

Do you mean the pink flower, Namsnanny? I don’t remember the name - it’s just a scrappy weed really in the borders, but it fills gaps!

It is amazing what affect living just a few hundred miles apart has on the garden.

Some of my roses have now finished their first flush and are ready for feeding and a dead heading, the rhododendrons have finished, and the sweet peas are about 5 ft tall and have been flowering for a month.

This winter we had very little frost and like everyone else buckets of rain. I have never seen so much flower in the garden, everything is flowering it’s socks off, the delphiniums are fantastic this year and the clematis are absolutely smothered, so maybe that is the reason?

The downside will be for me that when my sweatpeas etc have exhausted themselves, you will all be still enjoying yours.

I’m going to feed like mad to try and prolong the season though. Did the pots yesterday in the garden, will do the front pots today and water like mad to try to build up the flowers for next year on the rhododendron.

Yes that's the one Lisagran, something about it reminds me of Japan!
Perhaps it's the flower shape and delicate colour that looks a little like cherry blossom?

Isn’t it a geranium? A very attractive one that comes well with shade. I’ll look up it’s name and get back

Whitewavemark2 Wed 10-Jun-20 15:44:12

Geranium Macrorrhizum! I think that’s how you spell it

Lisagran Wed 10-Jun-20 15:53:55

Yes, I think it is a hardy Geranium WWM2

Namsnanny Wed 10-Jun-20 15:54:24

Thanks Wwmk2 ...another one fir the plant wish list smile
Sounds like you've been hard at work.
Dry warm coming on to rain now through here

Lisagran Wed 10-Jun-20 15:57:55

Yes, that’s it WWM. It fills any gaps in borders!

Chilly raining here, so my garden plan has come to nothing. Fire on watching television.

Namsnanny Thu 11-Jun-20 09:57:47

Sounds like a good plan *Wwmk2 same for me today I think!

Actually out trying to weed and clear today. But rain is forecast later.

Hardly flaming June!

Just come in for a cup of coffee.

It's been so cold and very wet at times!

Spent today inside painting some old pots.

This photo was taken a couple of days ago, in really bright sun shine.
Aquilegia, Heuchera, Japanese Maple, and Carex.

I have a grass in a pot , Japanese something or other, but the dog sees it as his personal medicine cabinet and it is only ever in tatters.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 06:09:03

Aren’t the colours lovely though, and the brightness of the sun. That is what I long for in the depth of winter.

MawB Fri 12-Jun-20 06:34:34

That’s interesting Whitewave we used to have 2 ornamental grasses and both the late lovely Gracie and now Hattie have the same idea. Both plants had a permanent “short back and sides”
I think one may have survived - plant that is.

Just went out to feed the birds. It is very cold for June!

Going to prune the winter honeysuckle and tidy the shrub border today. Bit late to prune I think, but it has gone mad.

Namsnanny Fri 12-Jun-20 11:32:55

Yes still cold here too. But the wind isnt!
Re grass, well I haven't got a dog, so that helps me I suppose. But if I did I would have less of a problem with the local cats, so its swings and roundabouts.

Hello Maw nice to see you smile

Namsnanny Fri 12-Jun-20 16:13:15

Wow! Monsoon downpour here! Rain pouring off the roof as the guttering cant cope, straight onto my summer bedding pots!
My poor Busy Lizzie plants.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 16:21:11

Rain here so no gardening. It’s supposed to be 18c but feels like 12c

Lisagran Fri 12-Jun-20 23:11:09

Drizzled here today but no ‘real’ rain

Namsnanny Sat 13-Jun-20 13:45:14

Feeding the birds is non stop now isnt it? I do supplement the seeds and nuts with meal worm this time of the year. Bit of extra protein for the chicks!smile
Caught cat lurking again.....he is so beautiful. Grey with green eyes, and such a character. But sadly the birds have to be protected from his admirable hunting skills.
So I've sent for a contraption to scare him off

Namsnanny Sat 13-Jun-20 13:47:38

Lisagran lovely pots! Will have a closer look at the plants when I get home

I have a Japanese cedar in large pot in my zen garden in the front of the house. The trouble is that living on the South downs facing the sea we get a lot of wind, so I’m am going to have to find a more sheltered spot for it.

I have decided to replace it with a hosta “Empress Wu” which is supposed to be the biggest of all,
I want a statement plant and thought that as it dies down in the autumn I won’t have problem with the wind over the winter period.

Anyone got one? Am hoping the gravel and pot will keep the slugs away.

Anyone want a Japanese cedar? ? It is a lovely thing. It has to go into a pot as it won’t tolerate my soil. Blimmin’ nuisance though, I do like it.

Wwave ...I love hostas but dont have any because of the dreaded slugs and snails.
Our house was left empty before we moved in many moons ago, and when we attempted to clear the garden we found all the tree an md large shrubs had snails sitting happily up the branches!!
I'd never seen that before. I thought they just stuck onto rocks in dark placesgrin.
