My MiL told me about these. She also said they have to be picked before the end of June. I thought it was a German thing, or a make-do-and-mend wartime idea, which she had loads of. We have a walnut tree, but we're in Germany, so, sorry, no help.

Have you ever actually eaten any? What do they taste like?

There are two walnut trees in the main car park at Saltram House, Plymouth (National Trust property). However, the trees are very tall and I'm not sure how you'd reach them. I've eaten the walnuts but later in the season when they have dropped from the trees.

We are in Suffolk. There are walnut seedlings in every pot, thanks to the squirrels! The tree was primed this year, or I could have sent you some!

Oops sorry we aren’t in Devon, missed that bit ......

Pick when green, pierce walnut with something like a cocktail stick all over and pickle.
Lots of recipes online.
Wear gloves as they will stain your hands brown.
I’ve always wanted to do this but the squirrels often beat me to it.

This is a real long shot. I wish I knew if someone in South Devon who has or has access to a walnut tree? I would like to have a go at pickling walnuts and I know they have to be picked before the end of June. Can anyone help??
