Wire mesh is the best you can do until the bulbs are through next spring, the only alternative is poisoning or shooting. I have the opposite problem, squirrels planting walnuts in the borders and pots, industrious little sods.

Put out food for them. It seems counter-intuitive, but, sometimes you have to work with what you've got. We have a mill pond at the bottom of our garden, many rats live around it. Some ventured into the house. We employed a pest control company who suggested we put bird feeders near where the rats live to encourage them to stay away from the house. It has worked a treat.

I only had a few bulb pots but I gathered them together and put the grill shelf from the BBQ across them till the bulbs were through it seemed to work.

Does anyone else have problems with squirrels digging in pots and borders? I think half the bulbs I planted last year disappeared because of them. Is there a way to deter them? I've put a wire mesh on the affected border but I'm not sure how to secure the pots with spring bulbs in them.
