Now I have a mutant dandelion clock smile

lemongrove yeah, I saw the photos on the Internet of that garden.

The decking, fence and shed have all gone now. None of the wood had ever been treated and the shed was falling down.

Savvy I once saw a tv programme about a house and garden that had been let go ( to put it mildly) and the council eventually recovered ( amongst other things) two vans and three cars, so yours can’t claim the prize for worst overgrown garden ?Still, that shed will come in useful.
Now, about those red triffids....

Savvy Wed 26-May-21 17:59:17

lemongrove you'd think they were real if you'd seen my garden when I first moved in. At the top of the garden I found decking, a shed and a 6ft fence nobody knew about.

Beware, it could be a Triffid baby ?

I thought triffids were red.

You mean...if they were real??

Clearly a mutant - I blame Brexit

...or Boris ?

Yup, fasciation is correct. It does happen to other plants too, such as Forsythia and Delphiniums.

My hobby is growing cacti, (have a very large collection in two greenhouses), and this sometimes occurs in certain species, creating what is known as a “crest”. These are usually grafted on to an easier species, and are very popular with some collectors, who will pay large sums of money to obtain them.

Just a freak of nature, really.

SpringyChicken Wed 26-May-21 07:28:34

I’ve seen fasciation before, it’s not uncommon. If you want to be rid of the dandelion, put salt on it.

grandMattie Wed 26-May-21 07:18:39

Fasciation.
The dandelion is also the symbol of Larousse publications and its motto is “Je seme a tout vents”.

vegansrock Wed 26-May-21 06:30:28

In some French media they call Boris Johnson the dandelion

nanna8 Wed 26-May-21 02:38:22

Is it’s name Boris? Looks like it needs a haircut.

Ro60 Wed 26-May-21 01:38:40

Fascination can be caused by a drop in temperature - such as we've had this year.
Over the years I've had it in various plants - sometimes producing triple sized flowers - it's not dangerous & sadly revert to normal the next year.

I'd say it's not the mutant dandelion you should be worrying about, rather the mutant bees that will be coming to feed off it... ???

Greyduster Tue 25-May-21 21:50:44

My GS’s guinea pigs would be over the moon with that one!? Yum yum!

I think this is something called Fasciation. It's just a quirk of nature. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasciation

EllanVannin Fri 07-May-21 17:14:54

It's like the funny-shaped veg and tomatoes that you see.

EllanVannin Fri 07-May-21 17:13:49

I've actually seen them like this in the past, mutants which appear in many flowers etc. in the world of biology.
I remember seeing double marguerites years ago.

MiniMoon Fri 07-May-21 17:05:46

It looks like a double dandelion to me. They occur pretty regularly, and you needn't worry about it.

NotSpaghetti Fri 07-May-21 17:04:39

Fascinating!
Can you market it?
grin

I have this bizarre mutant dandelion by my back door. The stem is about half an inch wide and the head looks like several heads fused together. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Should I be worried?
