Japanese Maple

I have been trying to kill the one in my front garden for two years now but it continues to spite me with its existence. Can any of you come round and use your acer killing magic on it??

I bought two for £1 each from Aldi. They struggled for the first year or two but are now romping away. Both in south east spot - quite sheltered.

annodomini Hopefully not and it certainly hasn't put me off. I lost a few well established shrubs last year which was very odd but I do have several acers and the rest are all looking very well indeed. Fingers crossed I don't lose anymore.

I've checked my tree's origin and it is a Japanese Acer Atropupureum Dissecta. I see it can grow to 3 metres and as it is now 20 years old, I hope it's not going to meet the same fate as Flexiblefriend's tree.

Are they not Japanese maples then is that a different plant? I dont really know the names of plants.

It may be something to do with the potting compost you’re using, as acers prefer ericaceous compost I’ve found. I’ve got four in pots, various colours and they all do well in my garden. I’m in the mountains, so it’s windy, but they are sheltered to some extent because in the winter I move the pots nearer the house so they get more protection. They are in the sun in the summer for most of the day.

I’m envious of all your beautiful acres. I had one in a big pot but had to give it to a friend to prevent it dying. It’s too windy here.

My DD has one in a pot that is thriving against an east facing house wall. She's had it for about 10 years. Her garden is small with neighbours' fences a; around so it's quite sheltered. My conclusion is that it needs shelter before sunlight.

It's a purple one but it's started throwing out green shoots. Do you think it would have been grafted and the shoots are coming from the root stock? Or do they have a tendency to revert?

Anyway, I've advised her to trace the shoots back to their base and cut or pull them off.

The back bit of my garden has some shelter I didnt think it would like full sun because the front is not that sunny.

A few years ago I bought two maples (it was a BOGOF offer).
I planted one in my sheltered front patio which has tall shrubs sheltering it, and the other one in a more exposed spot in the back garden. The front patio one survived and is now huge and very beautiful, but the other one in the back garden only survived for less than two years.
So i think they like being sheltered.

I love them in all their colours, I do envy you. Mine on the balcony died after many years and I would like to replace it however I am stopped by the price 50 euros. I only like to buy cheap plants because if I go away for a month or more neighbours may forget to water them. However I saw a bonsai one for 20 euros this weekend and I wondered if I potted it would it grow normally after a time

Ive got no idea which "make" it is but its my DH pride and joy because it was tiny when we brought it.
We have a Japanese sort of theme at the end of the garden it would look lovely there, I think we will put it there and hope for the best.?

What a lovely tree Dryginger and yours too annodomini. I was given an acer as a housewarming present 12 years ago, but poor thing struggles here. We live on a windy hill and no area of the garden is sheltered. Have moved it into a pot, but although it has doubled in size the leaves go brown and shrivelled at the first hint of wind.

We have a fairly minimal gravel garden at the front and I’d really love some cloud trees. Anyone experience of these, or pruning one from scratch, and what sort of tree?

I have several dotted around the garden and all appeared to be thriving but last year one seemed to be struggling and although I planted it twenty years ago it gave up the fight at the beginning of this year and my son cut it down. Very odd as it had thrived for twenty years and was about 15 foot tall. I have replaced it, took a while to find the same one but I'm going to grow it in a pot to begin with so I can keep an eye on it. I'll plant it out once it's more established. I was quite shocked at how expensive they've become now. Without knowing which one you have it's difficult to advise where to put it.

Dryginger, the 'lovely garden' is an illusion because two floods in five years washed away all the perennials I had planted. The only thing that makes it colourful is the variety of foliage, plus several flowering shrubs.

Lovely maple dryginger. We have two planted on really flat ground (and surrounding ground) which is against advice but they are doing really well!

I adore them but can’t grow them. I’ve had them in every location in the garden but still they die.
I take heart in the fact that Monty Don can’t grow them.
My neighbour has them everywhere. North, south, east, west, shade, sun different soils. It’s not fair ?
