Gooseberries colour

Some gooseberries are red but if they were green last year that seems odd.
Our gooseberries have been very poor this year.
It's quite late for gooseberries, perhaps they're just very ripe.

Perhaps you could try one, if you feel ill don't feed them to anyone else

I have seen red ones at the farm shop but never tried them. We usually pick ours at the end of June.

Thank you all. I'm going to risk it! Weird how they were plump and the green variety last year, and totally different this year. Maybe multi coloured next year with stripes!?

Berries will be smaller when weather has been dry in the previous weeks. Also, you may get a small crop of big ones or more small ones. There are lots of varieties- some stay green, others are yellow and others ripen to red, like yours. Enjoy them! The birds got a lot of ours?

??? I love gooseberries however they are served.

Green= not ripe
Red=ripe

Some varieties of gooseberry are green whilst other dessert types which are not so sour are red. What has happened to your is very strange. Can’t be cross pollination. Could it be your gooseberry was grafted?

Well we ate them. If I'm not on here tomorrow you'll know why!

I hate gooseberries but have so many this year that my friend who loves them gets a bag every time I see her and I ve frozen some too mine are green with a bit of pink streaking some but definitely not red

If you have any spare they make a smashing gooseberry gin.

I have about a pound in weight from my one gooseberry bush and they are the redish colour too. I am thinking about making gooseberry jam. My best friend bought some at a country fair
( before covid) and it was beautiful!!!
