I read an article suggesting boiling water with added salt. Not sure if it would harm future planting though.

To be honest most weedkiller don't work any more. This is also the wrong time of year to apply them. Better in spring and early summer.

Just pull ‘em up

Systemic weed killers like glyphosate will kill most (not all) live weeds, roots and all, they are just about the only way you are going to kill bindweed or other persistent weeds, leave it a week or so before you replant, As an alternative you can use a weed burner but you won’t kill the roots, or any seeds yet to germinate, do not use salt that’s only suitable for a patio.

I pull or hoe any large weeds then use a burner on the borders and rose beds, not the easiest or cheapest but works for me

I was actually going to ask if anyone has bought one of those electric things that zap the weeds? I’ve got crazy paving (probably the only person in the world that still has it) and there are weeds all over it. And on my lawn and I don’t want to use weed killer.

I've got crazy paving, too, Maybee. It came with the house. Currently it is growing a fine marjoram plant, wild strawberries, buddleia seedlings, campanula, dandelions, chickweed, ivy and various nameless things. It is the bane of my life. The only way I've found to get rid of the weeds is weedkiller, but even then they sneak back in. I'm thinking of just letting them take over. I'll tell people I'm rewilding it...

PS I have got a weed burner but I feel so mean killing the spiders and ants... And the weeds come back...

The trouble is when I dig the weeds out I take out the sand and cement as well. I have tried covering sections of it to deprive the weeds of light. I leave lots of piles of rubbish for the creepy crawlies! Something just crossed my mind to be ignored by people of a squeamish disposition. If I got the dog to wee on the weeds would it kill them the same way it kills the grass?
