Reducing the width of a box hedge

I imagine there are only two things you can do.

Either ask the man with the chain saw back and get him to cut down some of the width by chopping of the branches as near the roots as possible to reduce the width, or start uprooting the width you want rid of.

At the front of my house I have a box hedge. A year ago this week I had the height reduced by half, as it was blocking the light in my lounge.
It looked awful after this, the guy did it with a chainsaw.
However, when it came back in the Spring it looked good and my lounge (where I have to have net curtains) is much lighter.
The only problem now is the hedge looks a bit like it's collapsed and has increased in width.
Any tips on the best way to go about this?
