Delaying planting new dahlia tubers

They should be fine. They might start to sprout but it won't matter.
I planted 20 tubers in pots last year and nurtured them inside my french windows until the risk of frost was over. However, as soon as I put them outside to harden off , they were stripped bare by slugs. I think I ended up with 3 plants which survived. Be warned! Good luck!

Thanks Shysal. I have had dahlias before that have been eaten by slugs just as the shoots were emerging. It is so disheartening. I admit to using slug pellets these days which I appreciate is not ideal.

I think they will be OK. I was just worried they might dry out too much and turn to dust. In the past I have been able to plant them within a few days of receiving them.

Dahlias should not be planted out till after the possibility of frost is past and they should be fine as you have stored them Pinkcosmos. I pot mine up in the greenhouse in late March, with just enough heat to keep frost out and then plant them on my allotment early-mid May (East Midlands), when the shoots are about 3”. I wonder if you grow your namesakes also, I grow them on my allotment, the bees love them and they self-seed!

Thanks GrandmaSeaDragon. Unfortunately, I don't have a greenhouse. Reading the responses, I am sure they will be Ok for a few weeks in the brown paper bags.

Yes, I love cosmos (hence the name). The bed I am planting the dahlias in is one I always use to mass plant with cosmos. The bed is about 15 ' x 6'. My cosmos always seem to grow exceptionally tall - about 5' in some cases and they block the view of the garden.

I tried dahlias a couple of years ago and they also grew too tall and some blew over in the wind. I am now trying a dahlia called art deco. It is supposed to be shorter. I think it from a range called gallery dahlias. They were recommended following a post I put on GN.
