I have used the brands sold for this purpose but the result doesn't last long and it is quite expensive. Has anyone used a disinfectant (e.g.zoflora) for this? Although I walk my dogs frequently they are in and out of the garden all day. I have had it power washed in the past but that didn't last long either.

I think I said the OP should replace it with real grass in the interests of her dogs so will fess up.
I think...
Maybe not.
I'm confused.
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
Yes they have.
Noone has said if it’s in situ it should be removed. It would be better for it to have not been laid in the first place , which if it were banned or not available it wouldn’t be. Anyway it’s come all the way from China so we will have to let it stay on top of U.K. soil for the next 500 years.
I suggest that the comfortably off, physically able grans should form an 'artificial grass removal' service for those not so fortunate.
For a nominal fee, the group could arrange and oversee the safe removal of the offending plastic, disposal of it, levelling of the ground beneath, ready for grass to be laid.
Win/win situation, I'd say.
whiff my views aren’t rigid apart from when it comes to people destroying the environment. It seems your view is a free for all with everyone doing whatever that like. You are at the moment entitled to buy as much plastic grass as you want. That’s just as rigid a view as my thinking it should be banned.
Certain insecticides are the best thing for getting rid of pests , for example vine weevils. But they are so bad for other things , bees for one , that they are banned ! Artificial grass suits some people , but it is plastic , other plastics get banned , so get rid of artificial grass
I do know that we can’t all mow or strim, myself included ,,but we have real grass , it does have bumps and hollows , so not perfect , I’m lucky that my SIL cuts it , I feel for people who like the smooth green for walking on , but the environment is not improved by plastic
vegansrock I give up . Should have known from other threads how rigid your views are.
Whiff Sounds like you want a free for all with anyone having and doing anything they like. This individual selfishness has led to the problems we have - destroying wildlife, polluting the oceans etc No I don’t disrupt everyday life for anyone - why would you think anyone who happens to be vegan would automatically do that? But I do think it is wrong to needlessly add to the damage being done to the environment in the name of “choice”and someone needs to say so.
I recycle etc the same as most people. I do every thing I can to help people. But I don't tell people they can or can't have things.
Have you had your Covid vaccines? I have as I want to protection my family and others. Plus I still wear a mask when out keep my distance and do a lateral flow test every week.
As a vegan are you also an environmental activist who stops people from going about their daily life?
It's people imposing their narrow views on others that cause harm. They have blinkers on. They only see their view as I say we are human beings and can choose. You have chosen your way of life . I have chosen mine . Neither of us is wrong . But I would never say your life style is wrong anymore than you should say mine is.
We all have free will.
whiff are you suggesting we should have free choice in everything? There is legislation preventing use from doing lots of things which might make our own individual lives more convenient. It might be easier and cheaper for us to go and dump our rubbish on street corners or chuck it in countryside, most of us wouldn’t do that as it’s illegal and unpleasant for others - however, some still exercise that “choice”. If artificial grass were unavailable people wouldn’t have that choice and it would be one less thing for future generations to have to cope with. I don’t think there is one way for people to live but the climate crisis is real and the over use of single use plastics is one of the main culprits in destroying the environment. We will have to learn to live with fewer choices if we want the planet to remain habitable in the future. You find it convenient to live with artificial grass, many people don’t have your mobility issues yet still choose it - maybe they should think twice.
veganrock next time I fall on a real grass will you come and pick me up and deal with my induries ? We all have choices in life . You choose to be vegan are you going to condemn me because I eat meat as well as having an artificial lawn.
We are human beings we all make our own choices in life. Are you saying your way is the only way to live ?
Artificial grass should be banned. Then people wouldn’t have a “choice” that will harm the planet. No doubt it will happen when it’s too late. I recently saw a photo of dogs playing on a bright pink plastic lawn. It made me sad.
Oh dear just read this. Some not very nice comments. At my old house I had 2 real grass lawns. After my husband died I had to have a gardener as it was to much for me. No I wasn't old when my husband died only 45 he was 47 when cancer killed him. I have been ill since I was 29 with neurological condition that effects my limbs. I was forever falling on the lawns as grass grows differently in parts. Plus if there is moss can make it lumpy.
When I moved my bungalow already had an artificial lawn. The previous owner was disabled and had it put done. It was a joy to walk on the lawn as I use a stick and have done since I was 29 now 64. Weeds started to appear through it and as suspected it was only put directly on the soil. As it had been put down 10 years ago. I recently had it replaced with a new artificial lawn. But had it done properly plenty of hard core and granular then a foam layer with drainage holes then the lawn. The foam layer was to cushion me when I fell. Which I try very hard not to. Had all the paving done so both the back and front door are flat. My garden is a haven for wild life. I stripped out both gardens and planted insect and bird friendly plants. I have a pond made out of a planter with oxygenating plants and 2 plants in baskets. Rocks so small birds can drink safely . In the winter I make sure it is ice free.
We all are free to make a choice between real and artificial grass and what is best for us as individuals. For me artificial grass has made my life easier and safer. If anyone has an issue with it I don't care. I know what is safer for me and easier.
I have a small patch of artificial grass inside the pergola outside my back door - put down by the previous owner.
My first instinct was to rip it up as there is decking underneath but my brother urged restraint in a ‘be careful what you wish for’ kind of way so I’ve decided to live with it for this summer while I get the rest of the garden sorted. Peggy has strict instructions to Never Wee on it!!
Anyone who thinks it is low maintenance has probably never had to sweep up autumn leaves or spring blossom from neighbouring trees or any of the other detritus that a mower would make short work of. The damn stuff sticks like s**t to a blanket.
As mentioned above, I would then have to dispose of it ? and I have no idea what state the decking is in. The previous owner was losing her sight so maybe bright green was easier to see.
I haven’t said replace it - I’ve just said anyone thinking of getting it - please don’t. If you’ve already got it - it. will eventually discolour, bits of the fake grass will break off, it will get stinky, hot and uncomfortable in summer, but you obviously like it so hang onto it.
Yes, so for those saying "replace it", what would happen to it once it's taken up?
Landfill?
That makes zero sense, since it is already down and in place.
Artificial grass doesn’t stay pristine and does discolour and bits get broken over time - people chuck it out where it will remain in landfill for hundreds of years.
Yes, bit then what would happen to the artificial grass that's already there?
Could have lawn replaced with pebbles or slabs.
“MayBee70” in either case you pour good clean water over the area to dilute it into the ground. You shouldn’t have to dig it over.
My dog had a very bad tummy this morning. I’m going to have to dig up the area where it happened, burn it and re seed it. I don’t know know how I could have cleaned that up if it had happened on artificial grass.
Oh yes, fox poo is disgusting.
Cat poo can be vile too.
My friend's two dogs didn't smell of urine, they just smelt "doggy", well old doggy!
I’m as sure as I can be my two aren’t smelly. I wash their beds weekly, the have good diet so no problems there. I’ve never worried about them smelling of urine - Fox poo on the other hand
