My Acer Has Set Seeds

I have a very large red maple in the centre of my garden. Yesterday, as we walked down the path, my DiL noticed that it was covered with little red 'aeroplane' seeds, like the seeds spread by sycamores, only tiny. In all the years I've had that tree, I've never noticed these seeds, my green weeping acer doesn't have them. The couple who are doing some work on my garden noticed the seeds and they also said they had never seen these before. I frequently find little sycamores growing where they're not welcome, so are my neighbours going to find mini maples in their gardens?

Probably, they ripen in the autumn and will start sprouting next spring if you’re lucky. I’d pot some up if I were you to pass on to friends and family because they are such lovely trees.

They may do.

A joyful find or a nuisance, depending upon one's point of view.

My red acer sets seeds every year and I frequently find small seedlings growing where they shouldn't.

Mine was covered in seeds a couple of years ago. We’d had a patio built around it and Mr Google told me it’s often a reaction to trauma! Nothing grew from them and it hasn’t happened again.

How wonderful!

I just looked at a fairly small one in a pot at the garden centre - £99.99!

I don't think it's had any trauma recently. I might try potting up some seeds to see what happens. Thanks for all your responses.

I saw one on the park yesterday that was also covered in seeds. Have never seen it before either. The seeds are beautiful !

I would think so.
